After being marked, Fang Fengzhi found it difficult to adjust. His gland no longer troubled him, and he did not have to worry about suddenly going into heat outside, but the Alpha pheromones lingering on him were far too strong. People kept looking his way at work. Even the Omega colleagues he was close to stayed well away, saying the pheromones on him were strong enough to make them uncomfortable. They also teased him about having such an exceptional Alpha husband.
Fang Fengzhi could only laugh awkwardly along with them. He offered no reply.
His routine after work had changed as well. Afraid that acquaintances would notice the difference in his pheromones, he could only accept the Alpha’s suggestion and stay at his house for now. Fortunately, Fu Baiqi had recently said that overtime would keep him away for about a month. For the time being, he would not discover that Fang Fengzhi was not going home.
It was not that Fang Fengzhi wanted to hide things from Fu Baiqi. He simply had no idea what to do. He did not want a divorce. Had this marriage never been his, he would not have harbored such hopes. But he was already with Fu Baiqi. They had legal proof. The thought that the person he had liked ever since he was young had become his husband was too alluring to relinquish. Besides, they were fated mates with perfect compatibility. His own parents had come together because their pheromones matched, and they were happy now.
He believed in pheromone compatibility. All he and Fu Baiqi needed was time.
That made him want to wait until the mark disappeared, pretend nothing had happened, and return to Fu Baiqi. Then they could go on as before. But that would be terribly unfair to his husband. Having betrayed him, Fang Fengzhi could not remain by his side with a clear conscience.
The matter lodged in his chest, impossible to swallow or dislodge. His heart remained suspended in anxiety, afraid he might run into Fu Baiqi or his family on the street. He wanted to give himself some breathing room before carefully considering what to do.
Staying in someone else’s house, especially the house of the Alpha who had marked him, kept Fang Fengzhi constantly on edge. Although the Alpha had made a very good impression before and had offered a reasonable explanation for that day, Fang Fengzhi still did not fully trust his promise not to do anything to him.
An Alpha driven into rut by pheromones had no reason left. He would not remember what he had promised.
Fortunately, the Alpha was true to his word about rarely coming home. Fang Fengzhi had not seen him for several days, which helped him relax a little.
When he returned to the Alpha’s villa, the housekeeper was preparing dinner. He changed his shoes and went to help. Staying in someone else’s home always felt awkward. Finding something to do made him feel more at ease.
He was staying in the guest room farthest from the master bedroom. The Alpha had originally assigned him the room next door, but traces of the man’s pheromones lingered there. Fang Fengzhi’s body was too sensitive to them. Even the faintest whiff made him grow hot all over.
That was the difference between before and after being marked. Before, anyone’s pheromones could send Fang Fengzhi into heat. Afterward, he responded only to the pheromones of the man who had marked him, and his response was intensely strong. The Alpha’s mark had temporarily soothed the restlessness in his body, but Fang Fengzhi was even more careful to avoid extensive exposure to his pheromones. It could so easily trigger heat.
He could, in theory, have found a hotel to stay in. But that would not work.
Being marked had one major drawback.
He would crave his marker’s pheromones desperately.
The pheromones the Alpha had left inside him were finite. After several days, they were already nearly depleted. Without the Alpha’s pheromones, an Omega would develop such an intense craving that normal life became impossible. It was like lacking an essential nutrient. He would not die, but he would feel terribly ill and miserable.
Ordinary Alpha-Omega couples maintained the pheromones in their bodies through sex after marking. Fang Fengzhi could not. He could not take his relationship with the Alpha any further.
So whenever he felt unwell, he would silently stand outside the Alpha’s bedroom. It was someone else’s room, after all. He could not simply go in. Instead, he quietly opened the door a crack, letting the pheromones spill out and envelop him for a little while. Once he had absorbed enough, he left immediately.
He despised himself for behaving like some kind of pervert. Yet he had no other solution.
The housekeeper happened to witness his strange behavior outside the bedroom several times. Puzzled, she called Min Zhi and told him. Min Zhi, however, did not seem surprised.
He had already seen Fang Fengzhi doing it on the security cameras. He had attended physiology classes. He knew the Omega was acting this way because he lacked the Alpha’s pheromones.
Still, watching Fang Fengzhi so cautiously take in his scent made him think of a small animal sneaking food. It was rather amusing.
Only a few hours after his conversation with the housekeeper, he received another call from the villa that afternoon. This time, however, it was the Omega on the line.
“Mr. Min…”
Min Zhi paused at his voice. He had not expected the Omega to call and assumed something had happened.
“What is it?”
There was a pause before the man on the other end spoke with some difficulty.
“Sir… could I borrow one of your ties?”
“A tie?”
Min Zhi picked up the document he had just set down.
“Of course.”
After hanging up, Fang Fengzhi let out a relieved breath. He had worried the Alpha would press him for an explanation. Instead, he had simply agreed.
He had felt unwell all day. Even food seemed tasteless. Standing outside Min Zhi’s bedroom for a while had helped, but a little over ten minutes later, the discomfort returned. He had to go to work that afternoon. Afraid something would happen, he could only borrow an item carrying Min Zhi’s pheromones for temporary relief.
Worried that the scent would fade, Fang Fengzhi tucked the tie into his pocket.
They shared an office with several Alpha colleagues. A single breath of their scents made him feel so uncomfortable that he could barely breathe. He hurriedly took out Min Zhi’s tie, discreetly held it beneath his nose, and inhaled deeply.
The addictive fragrance rushed from his nose straight into his mind, making his whole body shudder. A forceful, fierce heat began at his gland and slowly spread through his limbs.
Someone called him from behind. Fang Fengzhi snapped back to himself and hastily tucked the tie away.
The tie seemed to possess some strange magic. He could not stop thinking about it. It was clearly a harsh, smoky scent, yet Fang Fengzhi thought it smelled wonderful. Bewitched, he kept taking it out and bringing it to his nose for another breath. But he could not bear to smell it for too long, afraid he would inhale every last trace of pheromones and leave nothing behind.
The pheromones on the tie grew fainter while Fang Fengzhi’s body grew hotter. His mind turned to paste, occupied solely by that scent. Finally, when the heat became unbearable, he went to the restroom and splashed cold water on his face. The sight of the man in the mirror, cheeks fiercely flushed and longing written across his face, struck him like a blow and brought him to his senses.
He had spent so long breathing in that Alpha’s pheromones. It would have been stranger if he had not gone into heat.
Fang Fengzhi hurriedly took suppressant medication from his bag and swallowed it. Fortunately, he was marked now. Other Alphas would not do anything to him.
For some reason, however, the medication did not work. He remained dazed and heavy. After work, he took a taxi straight back to the villa. He locked himself in his room, took a cold shower, and even fingered his wet entrance until he climaxed once. Yet the heat inside him did not diminish.
He could only take out his specialized suppressant injection. The doctor had advised him not to use it last time, but now Fang Fengzhi did not hesitate. He aimed for the vein in his arm and injected the drug.
At first, a penetrating chill spread through his body. That was normal. Suppressants forcibly pushed a person’s heat down. It was unpleasant, but once he endured this part, he would be all right.
Strangely, this time even the high-strength drug could not suppress the heat within him. The Alpha’s pheromones were too powerful. He had taken several deep breaths of them earlier, and now they clung to him relentlessly. Without the man who produced them, the desire inside him remained trapped, unable to find release. He felt so miserable that he could not even raise his hand.
Through his hazy awareness, all he could think of was going to Min Zhi’s room. It was filled with pheromones that could bring him pleasure. Surely being there would ease his desire.
