The Alpha’s pheromones were on the verge of invading his body. Fang Fengzhi glanced at the floor buttons, only to find that just one was lit.
The same floor? His palms grew slick with anxious sweat, his cheeks flushed fiercely, and a shudder ran through his increasingly dazed body.
Just then, the elevator doors opened. No one was outside.
A sudden rush of air swept past him. At some point, the man had pressed a button to stop the elevator here. As he passed Fang Fengzhi, a wave of potent pheromones surged into Fang Fengzhi’s body. His limbs went so weak that he could no longer stand. Leaning against the wall, he slowly slid down into a sitting position.
He thought he might be going into heat.
Frowning, Min Zhi strode into the stairwell. Few people used it, and there was not a trace of pheromones in the air. He felt in his pocket, took out a cigarette, and placed it between his lips. After lighting it, he leaned against the wall, lowered his head, and drew deeply. Only after a long while, when the desire in his body and the chaotic images in his mind slowly began to recede, did he part his lips and let the smoke escape through both his mouth and nose.
That Omega’s pheromones suited his tastes far too well. In the tiny elevator, every inch of space had been saturated with his scent. It had nearly destroyed Min Zhi’s self-control. Had he been an Alpha or a Beta, Min Zhi might have lost control and marked him on the spot.
Fortunately, he was an Omega.
Min Zhi’s aversion to Omegas had nothing to do with an Enigma’s instincts. There were Enigmas who married Omegas. He simply did not like them, just as some people naturally disliked cilantro, for no particular reason.
Of course, no one knew they disliked cilantro until they had tasted it.
Min Zhi had tried.
Pheromones accumulated easily in an Enigma’s body. Regular visits to the research institute could release them, but the best solution was still to have a partner share the burden.
Unfortunately, finding sexual partners was difficult for Enigmas. Alphas or Betas who slept with them faced considerable risk. They might even change sex and become Omegas. Almost no one was willing to date them.
So Min Zhi could only seek out Omegas.
Not long after reaching adulthood, he had found one. They had not been romantically involved, merely met at a bar. The man’s looks were reasonably close to Min Zhi’s preferred type, and they had gone straight to a hotel.
While showering, they had already begun clinging to each other impatiently, their skin pressed close, wet and hot. Min Zhi had released only a little of his pheromones before the Omega seemed ready to go into heat, leaning weakly against him, his entrance soaking wet.
A single finger had made him cry out in pain. Min Zhi had patiently stretched him, only for the Omega to climax from his fingers alone. He looked at that beautiful, flushed face and the pale, soft body resting in his arms. Even a gentle pinch left a mark.
The room was thick with the Omega’s alluring pheromones, so strong they caught in his throat. Yet Min Zhi stood, his expression cool.
“Sorry. I’m not feeling very well.”
Too delicate. He had no desire to continue.
He disliked anything frail, whether docile animals or human beings.
That encounter had been his fault. Afterward, however, he never arranged another date with an Omega.
Once his thoughts had settled, Min Zhi walked over to the trash can and extinguished his cigarette in a puddle. Then he slowly returned to the elevators. What a coincidence that his brother lived on the same floor as that Omega. But if he had not stepped out when he did, he would have lost control. His body might respond to Omegas, but he would never have sex with them.
More importantly, that man already had an Alpha of his own.
Fang Fengzhi made it home, locked the door, and immediately collapsed onto the floor.
That scent had been overwhelmingly potent. Never in his life had he encountered pheromones so powerful. Sweat beaded at his temples. His entrance was wet, the aching emptiness unbearable. Now that scent was surging through his body, finally gathering at his gland and grinding against it relentlessly, as though it would spark into flame.
His heat had arrived early.
Fu Baiqi had not been home for the past few days because of work. He probably would not return tonight either. Fang Fengzhi forced himself up from the floor. He needed to find his suppressants. One injection, and he would be all right.
He had barely taken a few steps when he lost his footing and fell.
“Ah…”
Propping up his upper body, he turned to look at his right foot. He had probably twisted his ankle. The pain made his vision swim. On top of that, his heat had drained all his strength. Without his husband’s pheromones to soothe him, he had always relied on suppressants to hold his heats at bay. As a result, each heat struck more fiercely.
Now he did not even have the strength to crawl.
His phone, which had fallen from his bag beside him, suddenly chimed. He stretched out his arm and picked it up, but it was only a spam message. Disappointed, he switched off the screen. A few seconds later, he turned it on again. His ankle hurt too badly. Opening his frequent contacts, he called Fu Baiqi.
It rang for a long time. Just as he was about to try again, someone answered.
“Hello?”
Fang Fengzhi hung up.
It was not Fu Baiqi. It was Bai Zhen.
The fall had hurt terribly. There was not a part of his body that did not ache. He lay on the floor, unable even to straighten himself up. With his cheek pressed against the floor people walked over, his nose suddenly stung, and tears spilled out.
Heat was so difficult to endure. His body was growing strange, too. Even a stranger’s pheromones could trigger it now. If this continued, what would he do if he suddenly went into heat in public one day?
Tears slipped from his eyes onto the floor. He felt miserable, whatever the reason.
Bai Zhen was lucky. Perhaps Fu Baiqi would take pity on him and give him a temporary mark. Fang Fengzhi thought he probably never had to suffer like this.
Min Zhi stayed at his brother’s overnight. The next morning, he left after the newly hired housekeeper arrived. Although the company was on its annual break for the next few days, he still had a great deal of unfinished work.
As he stepped outside, he heard the neighboring door close. He turned and, to his surprise, saw the Omega.
The Omega paused at the sight of him as well, apparently surprised to find him on this floor. Fang Fengzhi quickly recovered, however, and offered him a polite smile.
Watching him limp, Min Zhi could not help looking down at his foot. White bandages wrapped his right ankle. He had probably sprained it.
An Omega was an Omega. He could even sprain his ankle at home.
They entered the elevator together, but the awkwardness of the previous evening did not repeat itself. Min Zhi could not smell his pheromones. He glanced at the back of Fang Fengzhi’s neck. A suppressant patch covered it.
He looked away.
After they left the elevator, the Omega continued limping. Min Zhi was much taller, and looking down at him, he kept getting the impression that the man was unsteady and might fall at any moment.
He had not intended to interfere, but something about the sight made him feel sorry for him. Judging by his condition, Fu Baiqi probably had not come home last night either. The Omega must have relied on suppressants to get through his heat. Omegas were extremely vulnerable during heat. Without a husband’s pheromones to soothe him, he must have suffered. Besides, Min Zhi himself might have been partly responsible for triggering it.
As he was thinking this, he caught the Omega swaying out of the corner of his eye. His body made the decision for him.
The expected pain of striking the floor never came. Instead, Fang Fengzhi fell against a firm chest carrying a familiar pheromone scent.
He froze. Once the man had helped him regain his footing, he lifted his head to look at the Alpha before him.
“Are you all right?”
“Y-yes…”
The Alpha’s pheromones were overpowering. Fortunately, Fang Fengzhi had already taken a suppressant injection. Otherwise, such close contact would surely have sent him into heat.
Min Zhi looked at the Omega’s dazed face.
“Are you going to the hospital?”
The question left Fang Fengzhi momentarily confused.
“Huh? Yes…”
“I can drive you.”
“What?”
Fang Fengzhi’s eyes widened as he finally came back to himself.
“No, no, you don’t have to. I can get a taxi outside.”
As he spoke, he tried to push the Alpha’s hand away, but the man stood immovable before him.
“It’s fine. It’s on my way.”
He let go.
“Wait here. I’ll bring the car around.”
With that, he walked away without looking back.
Even after getting into the Alpha’s car, Fang Fengzhi was still a little bewildered. He could not understand why the man was being so kind to him.
Surely it could not be just because he had helped him pick out two pieces of fruit yesterday?
