Chapter 22: It’s All Right. I’ll Help You

Heat flushed Fang Fengzhi’s whole body. For the first time, the longing he had endured for so long found relief, yet his body responded with an intensity he could scarcely withstand.

Min Zhi had given him what he needed.

Only, it was too much.

Fang Fengzhi did not know whether intimacy was always this overwhelming, whether it always left a person so close to the limits of endurance.

Yet he could not bring himself to ask him to stop.

Min Zhi released his grip on Fang Fengzhi’s legs. Red marks already marred the skin; any longer, and they might bruise. But without that restraint, Fang Fengzhi began struggling again. Despite his attempts to prepare him, the difference in their bodies remained too much for an Omega experiencing this for the first time.

His tears had never stopped. His eyes remained red throughout, his broken sounds slipping beyond his control as the sensations grew stronger.

Min Zhi found himself wondering whether this person was made of water.

Before long, however, Fang Fengzhi’s throat grew too dry for any sound. Even his breathing had turned hoarse.

Min Zhi touched his lips.

“Thirsty?”

He did not expect an answer. Looking at the soaked sheets, he knew he could not ignore Fang Fengzhi’s condition.

As he began to rise, the Omega protested with muffled cries. Min Zhi paid them no heed. Someone in heat could lose all concern for their own well-being, thinking only of escaping the torment before them.

He straightened his clothes and went out, his face composed. Had anyone entered then, even the Omega pheromones clinging to him would hardly have suggested what had just taken place.

He returned with warm water and slowly helped Fang Fengzhi sit up.

The moment they touched, Fang Fengzhi clung to him, shifting restlessly, unable to form a coherent sentence.

Min Zhi held him and caught both wrists in one hand to keep him still.

“Open your mouth.”

When Fang Fengzhi did not respond, he held his chin, gently opening his mouth before bringing the glass to his lips.

Fang Fengzhi was desperately thirsty. After one sip, he lifted his head for more, as though trying to swallow all that soothing coolness at once. Min Zhi watched his flushed lips and unconscious movements, then silently looked away.

The suppressant still dulled his sense of smell. He could barely detect Fang Fengzhi’s pheromones. Therefore, he reasoned, the scent could not be influencing him. He still knew what he should and should not do.

Once again, he assured himself that he had not lost his reason.

His body did not obey that assurance.

When he collected himself, he realized Fang Fengzhi had finished the water and was once more seeking closeness.

Min Zhi put the glass aside.

The brief respite ended. He bent over him again, returning them to their earlier intimacy.

He remembered protection. He even thought of it as the minimum respect owed to Fang Fengzhi—and to Fu Baiqi.

But those notions of propriety did nothing to prevent the encounter from becoming more forceful.

Fang Fengzhi was overwhelmed. He tried to draw away but could not escape the hands holding him. Pain, pleasure, and fear tangled together, leaving his awareness increasingly uncertain.

Then an unfamiliar sharpness brought him abruptly back.

Min Zhi had come too close to the boundary he feared most.

“Min Zhi!”

His voice was almost unrecognizably hoarse.

Min Zhi paused and looked up at his terrified face, but did not immediately move away.

Fang Fengzhi did not know whether the man was still lucid. He tried to speak again, only for the Enigma’s large hand to cover his mouth and nose.

Min Zhi bent over him, frowning, and slowly ended their contact.

The body beneath him shook.

Perhaps Fang Fengzhi did not know that calling his name at that moment would not restore his restraint. Instead, it only deepened his desire to possess him.

Pinned beneath him, Fang Fengzhi tried to breathe and found no air. He pulled at the hand covering his face, but his efforts were useless. His color began to change. The panic of suffocation swallowed everything else.

Min Zhi abruptly let go.

Fang Fengzhi dragged in a breath, as though pulled back from the brink. Before he could recover, Min Zhi’s lips covered his.

He could not push the man away. Gunsmoke remained bitter and overpowering, but desperate for air, he could only move closer, seeking breath from the person before him.

At last they kissed, in a closeness Fang Fengzhi no longer had the strength to resist.

Min Zhi released him soon afterward.

The chamomile was becoming clearer. His suppressant was wearing off.

Watching the Omega gasp, he frowned.

The heat in Fang Fengzhi’s body had only subsided temporarily. Soon it would return. Without soothing pheromones, everything else offered no more than momentary relief.

His own medication was also losing effect. He could inject another dose, but he could not keep doing that and stay here with Fang Fengzhi for an entire week.

His gaze settled on the Omega’s nape.

It was only a temporary mark. He could overwrite the Alpha’s mark with his own.

Then everything would be simpler. His pheromones could resolve it all.

He touched the bitten gland. Fang Fengzhi jolted.

From where he lay, he saw Min Zhi’s mouth part slightly, revealing a glimpse of sharp canine teeth.

He immediately pushed him.

The force was almost negligible, but Min Zhi stopped.

“I’m helping you.”

Fang Fengzhi’s eyes widened. He shook his head repeatedly.

“No… don’t…”

“It’s only a temporary mark. We’ve done it before.”

“What are you afraid of?”

“No.”

Fang Fengzhi covered his gland tightly.

“Baiqi will find out.”

Min Zhi went still.

For several seconds, he did not move. Only his frown deepened. Perhaps this Omega still did not understand how serious his condition was.

“Suppressants no longer work on you.”

“Do you remember what the doctor said?”

“You could lose the ability to conceive.”

He picked up Fang Fengzhi’s phone from the bedside and placed it in his hand.

“Call him. If he’s willing to help you, I’ll leave.”

Fang Fengzhi stared at him, then down at the phone.

For a long time, he did nothing.

Then warmth began rising through his body again. His awareness grew hazy, and the familiar torment returned.

Following Min Zhi’s instructions, he found Fu Baiqi’s number and called.

He understood that this heat was different. It had come too suddenly, too fiercely, brought on by what Fu Baiqi had done. If he kept enduring it without soothing pheromones, the consequences might go beyond an inability to conceive.

Something could truly go wrong with his body.

“Hello?”

After only a few rings, the call connected.

Fang Fengzhi glanced at Min Zhi. The man’s expression was blank, seemingly without a trace of guilt.

“Baiqi, it’s me.”

A pause.

“I know.”

His tone was somewhat cold.

“What is it?”

Fang Fengzhi clenched his teeth.

“Baiqi, I…”

He was breathing hard.

“I’m not feeling well.”

There was no answer.

He continued.

“I need you to help me…”

Fu Baiqi remained silent for a long time.

Fang Fengzhi’s heart raced. Just one word. If only he had even a little affection for him…

“Aren’t there suppressants at home? You—”

Fang Fengzhi ended the call.

Lowering his head, he let the hand covering his gland fall away. He no longer wanted to struggle. Nor did he want to look at Min Zhi.

Although the man had not heard Fu Baiqi’s words, Fang Fengzhi still feared finding pity in his eyes.

Gunsmoke drew slowly closer.

Then Min Zhi gathered him into his arms and spoke beside his ear, almost consolingly.

“It’s all right. I’ll help you.”

Fang Fengzhi’s nose stung.

His tears fell silently.
