Ji Shileng looked up, undisguised astonishment in his eyes.
He had suspected that he had died once.
Now it seemed he really had?
Qin Si stopped breathing for several seconds. Only when his chest began to ache did he gradually recover his senses.
He knew about Ji Shileng’s fall from the sky. In fact, his position and authority had given him access to the full account of what had happened.
Unwilling to consider the worst possibility, Qin Si offered a hypothesis. “Could the break be because that incident changed the course of Xiaoshi’s life?”
Guo Weishui thought for a moment. “Yes, that’s possible”
After her brief panic, Wen Qin regained some composure and nodded. “Xiaoshi really has changed a great deal since then”
Qin Si’s explanation reassured both mothers.
Ji Shileng secretly gave him a thumbs-up. Thank goodness Qin Si had come through at the crucial moment.
Otherwise, he dreaded imagining a future in which he had to report every outing beforehand, with bodyguards trailing behind him.
“The lifeline is actually a secondary concern” Guo Weishui’s gaze passed over Qin Si before returning to Ji Shileng. “The reading also shows that he will face another calamity in his life”
“A calamity?” Wen Qin murmured.
Among the recent comments about Ji Shileng on the interstellar network, one had read: If you knew his father was Ji Jie, you’d think he was born lucky too.
Honestly, with the Ji family behind him, what calamity could Ji Shileng possibly encounter?
Could the Ji family really be unable to stop it?
With everyone watching him, Guo Weishui continued, “The reading shows that this won’t come out of nowhere. The people behind it have been working in secret for a long time. Xiaoshi will interfere with something they’re doing, bringing this calamity upon himself”
“It will most likely put his life at risk”
Ji Shileng, the person concerned, merely smiled. The evening breeze lifted the hair over his forehead, his luminous skin almost glowing.
“If it’s a blessing, it isn’t a curse. If it’s a curse, there’s no escaping it” His expression was bold and carefree. “Let it come soon. I’m not afraid”
Wen Qin shot him a look, caught between amusement and exasperation. More than half the oppressive tension dissipated. “Who says something like that? The fewer calamities, the better, obviously”
Looking innocent, Ji Shileng offered another option. “Then we can simply choose not to believe there’s a calamity in my future”
Unable to bring herself to use any force, Wen Qin lightly patted his shoulder. “Always saying things to make your mother feel better”
Guo Weishui spoke up at the right moment. “But there’s no need to worry. A benefactor will help Xiaoshi through it”
“One side prospers, while the other suffers a loss” He smiled ruefully. “My skills are still too limited. I really can’t work out the specifics”
That was all he had been able to discern from the reading.
Wen Qin finally breathed a genuine sigh of relief. “It’s all right. You’re already very impressive”
Carrying on the feng shui arts of the old calendar era was no easy undertaking.
Fortunately, Guo Weishui had persevered and made a name for himself.
Hearing that Ji Shileng would have someone to help him and emerge safely, Wen Qin finally felt her heart settle.
As for one side prospering while the other suffered, the Ji family would never treat their benefactor poorly.
Qin Si lowered his eyes in thought.
Unless he was mistaken, he had a fairly good idea of what Ji Shileng’s calamity might be.
Whoever ended up suffering the loss, he would repay them generously, as long as Ji Shileng remained safe.
They watched Mrs. Guo and her son get into their car. Before leaving, she still remembered to wave and invite Ji Shileng to spend time with Guo Weishui again.
Ji Shileng laughed and readily agreed.
After all, there was always a next time after the next time. There were endless next times.
The Ji family’s driver waited nearby, and Wen Qin got into the car first.
Ji Shileng stayed behind to say goodbye to Qin Si. “Thank you for looking after me tonight”
“It was no trouble. Seeing you made me very happy” Qin Si smiled gently and asked, “Can we still meet tomorrow?”
Once Ji Shileng processed the question, he asked in return, “Haven’t we already agreed on tomorrow? Has something urgent come up?”
“I just wanted to make sure. One date with a bonus date thrown in feels like a windfall. It’s almost too good to be true”
Ji Shileng casually ran a hand through his wind-tousled hair and said with perfect seriousness, “Then go to bed early tonight. If you dream about having dinner with me too, that’ll be one date with two bonuses”
Qin Si couldn’t help laughing. He played along. “Then I’d better hurry home and get to sleep”
“Get some rest early, then”
“I will. See you tomorrow”
Qin Si remained where he was until Ji Shileng’s car had driven some distance away. Only then did he get into his own.
There was a little regret, really. He could have driven Ji Shileng home himself, couldn’t he?
But his conversation with Wen Qin and Guo Weishui’s reading made up for it.
Had he not been there, Ji Shileng certainly would never have told him.
To prepare for the threats that lay ahead, Qin Si felt it necessary to be even more careful.
The car turned a corner, and Qin Si’s figure disappeared from the rearview mirror. Wen Qin withdrew her gaze.
“Well?”
Ji Shileng stared blankly for quite a while before realizing she was talking to him.
“Huh?”
“You’re really just friends?”
“What else would we be?”
“I’ll ask Su Ke tomorrow”
Ji Shileng fell silent.
He tried to talk her out of it. “Mom, can’t you ask your own son? Why do you have to ask Su Ke? He’s been busy lately”
Please. Asking Su Ke would be a disaster.
He didn’t dare talk nonsense in front of Shiyun because she was far too intimidating.
With Wen Qin, however, Su Ke would undoubtedly let his imagination run wild.
“Busy with what?” Wen Qin asked curiously.
Most of the Su family worked in politics, but Su Ke was an exception. He had no interest in it whatsoever.
As for business, he didn’t want to start anything of his own either. Too much trouble.
If his best friend hadn’t opened a studio, he would most likely still be unemployed and living off his parents.
“That’s a little difficult to explain…”
Wen Qin glanced at him. “What’s difficult about it? Su Ke’s even in our family group chat. He’s one of us”
Ji Shileng hesitated, then decided Wen Qin probably wouldn’t have any objections anyway.
With complete honesty, he exposed his best friend’s equally idle days. “He’s actually busy going to the office every day to sleep”
Over the past two days, Su Ke’s attendance records had been unusually punctual.
If he had actually gone to the studio to deal with work, he would already have messaged Ji Shileng to come and help.
Before going to bed last night, Ji Shileng had sent him a message to ask.
Su Ke replied immediately, saying he was currently cultivating the appearance of a diligent employee to prove that he had no time to sit the Military and Political Commission’s recruitment exam.
Wen Qin fell silent.
She should have known.
Not long ago, she had heard Mr. Su mention that exam.
If Su Ke passed the written round, there would be no need to worry about the interview. He would be as good as accepted.
Unfortunately, Su Ke had no interest, which had infuriated his father enough to unleash a furious scolding.
Wen Qin sighed and told Ji Shileng, “Sleeping in an office can’t be as comfortable as sleeping at home. Send Su Ke a message and tell him to come sleep at our house. All his things are still there anyway”
Su Ke had loved visiting the Ji house since childhood. Over time, one of their guest rooms had simply become his own.
Ji Shileng wisely maintained his silence.
Could he admit that he had already invited him?
