“Let them both go! Whatever you want, take it out on me!”
If something happened to the male lead and this world collapsed as a result, wouldn’t all the hardship he had endured have been for nothing?
But the female spirit seemed to realize how much he cared about his two disciples—and that only made her more determined to toy with him.
“Cultivators really do cherish their bonds! We spirits aren’t entirely heartless either. How about this…”
Whatever she was scheming, she swept her sleeve, and the flowering vines binding Qin Du and Mu Yunting withdrew on their own.
“You two will fight. Whoever loses will have his vital essence drained until he dies. My sisters haven’t watched cultivators duel in such a long time!”
The lesser spirits erupted in delighted cheers.
Both men were handsome enough that a fight between them would certainly be worth watching.
More importantly, they were fellow disciples under the same master. Nothing pleased these spirits more than watching cultivators slaughter their own.
Qin Du and Mu Yunting exchanged a glance, each finding a challenge in the other’s eyes.
When neither moved, the flower spirit hauled Lin Huaiqing toward her and pressed an ornate dagger against his throat.
“Don’t make me repeat myself!”
“Xiao Du! Yunting! Don’t listen to her!” Lin Huaiqing shouted.
Both were his disciples; he cared for them equally. He had never imagined these female spirits could be so vicious.
His water-element Heavenly Spiritual Root gave him a natural ability to cleanse impurities, and his spiritual energy was already beginning to recover.
Once he regained even half his strength, these flower spirits would be no match for him.
The two men already shared a bitter enmity. With the flower spirit threatening Lin Huaiqing’s life as well, they went ahead and began fighting in earnest.
The spirits eagerly formed a circle around them to watch.
“What’s so interesting about fighting bare-handed?”
Someone in the crowd tossed out two rusty cast-iron swords.
They looked like weapons the hunters had carried for protection.
The two men picked them up and truly began to duel.
Qin Du had only learned swordsmanship in this lifetime. Naturally, his foundations were not as solid as those of Mu Yunting, a second-generation cultivator with a thoroughly orthodox background. Little by little, he lost the upper hand.
“Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!”
As the fighting intensified, the spirits cheered in unison, urging Mu Yunting to kill Qin Du.
Lin Huaiqing was frantic. He stumbled over the detoxification mantra several times.
The male lead and villain might be destined enemies, but surely Mu Yunting wouldn’t choose this moment to strike!
Another sword technique sent Qin Du sprawling under a surge of sword energy. The blade then came straight toward his face.
Mu Yunting had already knocked the sword from his hand.
On the ground with no time to defend himself, Qin Du braced for the killing blow.
But in the next instant, the blade changed course and pierced straight through a flower spirit watching behind him.
Her blood splashed over Qin Du.
Everything happened in a flash.
Qin Du reacted immediately. Scrambling to his feet, he retrieved his cast-iron sword and began fighting back against the spirits.
Chaos erupted. Most of the lesser spirits had only mediocre cultivation. In mere moments, Mu Yunting had cut through a whole swath of them.
“How dare you hurt my sisters! All three of you will die today!”
Seeing chaos erupt in her territory, the leader of the flower spirits was about to leap from the swinging bed and take those two bastards’ lives.
Then a sudden chill touched the back of her neck. An icy spirit sword had appeared against her throat.
Lin Huaiqing still lounged on the bed, looking utterly relaxed. The sword in his hand, however, was nowhere near as accommodating as its owner.
“When did you regain your spiritual energy?!”
“Just now…”
The flower spirit could no longer maintain her charming smile.
She had assumed that a blind man posed little threat, forgetting that the most harmless-looking of the three was their master.
“Immortal Master, don’t do anything rash. Whatever you want, we can discuss it.”
Unmoved by the beautiful woman’s plea, Lin Huaiqing tightened his grip on his sword.
“You flower spirits have claimed this mountain as your domain, slaughtered innocent villagers, and committed countless atrocities. If I don’t put an end to you today, more villagers will suffer.”
To defeat the enemy, strike down their leader first. Once the Flower Spirit Queen was dead, the remaining lesser spirits, none with even a hundred years of cultivation, would pose little threat.
Elsewhere, the lesser spirits were employing their usual tactic of overwhelming their enemy through sheer numbers. More than a dozen controlled vines that wound tightly around Qin Du.
Outnumbered, Qin Du could not fend them all off. With the vines wrapped around his body, he could hardly slash at them without cutting himself.
A slender flowering tendril was about to burrow through his ear and into his brain.
This was a favored technique of the flower spirits. Cultivator or mortal, anyone who fell victim to it would, at best, suffer permanent mental impairment. At worst, they would die on the spot.
With no time to consider anything else, Lin Huaiqing sent his bonded spirit sword flying over to sever every vine binding Qin Du.
But that gave the Flower Spirit Queen her chance. She immediately broke free of his restraint.
She moved to rush into the crowd of spirits and finish off Qin Du and Mu Yunting first.
Lin Huaiqing pursued her at once, engaging the Flower Spirit Queen in combat.
Qin Du struggled free of the remaining tangles of flowering vines. Only then did he see that it was Lin Huaiqing’s bonded spirit sword that had cut him loose.
“Master! Your sword!”
The Shuofeng Sword returned to Lin Huaiqing’s hand. With it back in his grasp, he felt more assured. Within a few exchanges, he gained the upper hand.
As Mu Yunting dealt with the lesser spirits around him, he kept a clear view of what was happening on Lin Huaiqing and Qin Du’s side.
If not for his master’s bonded spirit sword, Qin Du would surely have died just now.
Although he had already tried to prepare himself, seeing Lin Huaiqing’s concern for Qin Du firsthand still left him feeling painfully displaced.
Distracted, he failed to notice a lesser spirit launching a surprise attack from behind.
By the time he reacted, a sharp arc of sword energy had already cut his attacker in half at the waist.
“Yunting! Stay focused!”
“Yes, Master!”
The battle left Lin Huaiqing exhausted in both body and mind.
Not only did he have to contend with the Flower Spirit Queen and the lesser spirits’ sneak attacks on his own, but he also had to watch over his two disciples, ready to intervene whenever either was in danger.
By the time he finally obtained the Flower Spirit Queen’s core, he was drenched in blood.
Qin Du and Mu Yunting were no better off. They had killed more flower spirits than they could count, and both were covered in their blood.
“Master, are you hurt?!”
Qin Du was the first to hurry to Lin Huaiqing’s side and fuss over him. Once again, Mu Yunting was a step too late.
“I’m fine.”
All that remained was to clear the battlefield.
Qin Du gathered and stored the spirit cores scattered across the ground, while Mu Yunting went to search for the hunters’ remains.
Before a single incense stick could have burned down, Mu Yunting found the bodies of all six adult men in a cave within the flower spirits’ lair.
Each had been drained of vital essence until he died, leaving only a shriveled corpse of skin and bone.
