Under the table, Su Nuo secretly kicked Ji Xinghui. Stop talking, stop talking. If you keep going, my brother’s going to end your friendship.
Getting the hint, Ji Xinghui dropped the subject just in time. “This restaurant’s nice.”
“Yeah, yeah, totally.” Su Nuo played along with zero enthusiasm.
“Where did you go today, Nuonuo? I called you this afternoon but couldn’t get through,” Ji Xinghui asked.
He’d figured out that talking to Su Nuo was way more relaxing than talking to Fu Baihan.
Was Fu Baihan going through menopause or something?!
“I went to an audition,” Su Nuo answered. “My phone must have been on silent, so I didn’t hear it.”
After he came out, all he could think about was telling Fu Baihan the good news, so he didn’t even check for missed calls.
Besides, Yu Ning had been calling him nonstop lately. Even after being blocked, he kept calling from new numbers. Su Nuo couldn’t be bothered to look at missed calls anymore.
“An audition? You’re already starting to act, Nuonuo?” Ji Xinghui was puzzled. “Didn’t you just get into film school?”
“There happened to be a script that fit, so I went for it. It won’t interfere with school.” Su Nuo eagerly pitched it. “Star-ge, do you want to invest in this movie? I think it’s going to be a hit.”
Ji Xinghui was very interested. “Is the lead pretty?”
“Pretty.” Su Nuo smiled sweetly. “It’s Wei Sinian.”
Ji Xinghui: “…Never mind.”
That was a tough nut he could never crack, and he definitely didn’t look like the type to play the submissive role. Most of Ji Xinghui’s lovers were pretty girls. The few boys were all the innocent, sweet, cuddly type. In bed, he liked to be in control.
“Ji Xinghui, you talk too much.” Fu Baihan’s gaze was icy. “Can’t you even eat quietly?”
Ji Xinghui sighed and humbly buried his face in his food.
Fu Baihan never trusted Ji Xinghui. Besides worrying that Su Nuo would pick up his playboy habits, he also worried Ji Xinghui might try to seduce Su Nuo.
The few times Fu Baihan had seen him, the lovers he brought along were all pretty, inexperienced young guys. The man had no limits at all.
Facing the big bad wolf who had once secretly stared at his little brother in a daze, Fu Baihan always stayed on guard.
The kid he raised was absolutely not allowed to date someone like Ji Xinghui.
Other people got what they wanted from Ji Xinghui and he got what he wanted from them. Fu Baihan might complain about him sleeping around, but it didn’t affect their friendship. But if Ji Xinghui ever dared to make a move on Su Nuo, Fu Baihan wouldn’t just end their friendship. He’d break his hands.
In Fu Baihan’s mind, the plan was to take care of the kid for the rest of his life. Even if they each had their own families someday, they couldn’t live too far apart.
As for the kid’s future partner, even though that person hadn’t shown up yet, Fu Baihan was already extremely picky.
His sweetie had to find someone kind and nurturing who’d take good care of him, someone who’d never let him get hurt.
“Oh right, Brother, I worked it out with the director. I’m investing two million yuan, and it’ll count toward the box office split.” Su Nuo reported dutifully. He hadn’t spent much lately, so for a big expense like this he had to tell Fu Baihan. Otherwise, what if Fu Baihan thought he was out partying?
Fu Baihan’s train of thought was interrupted, pulling him back from his plans for the kid’s next few decades of life. After hearing him out, he nodded. “Is two million enough? I’ll add it back to your allowance next month.”
“It’s enough. The production isn’t short on funding anyway. The director probably thinks the money came from you.” Su Nuo had guessed the director’s thinking exactly. He just looked like a rich kid getting into show business for fun. What would he know about investing? Any respect they showed him was out of respect for Fu Baihan.
“Baihan, are you in the market for another little brother?” Ji Xinghui asked longingly.
He might think Fu Baihan was an old-fashioned patriarch, but when it came to handing out money, he was way too indulgent and way too generous!
“Someone like you? I wouldn’t take you for free,” Fu Baihan said without mercy.
Thank goodness the kid his parents brought home was Su Nuo. He couldn’t imagine if he and Ji Xinghui had been real brothers. They’d have started trying to kill each other by age five.
Su Nuo laughed along. Being so clearly favored and chosen in front of others was exactly what gave him confidence.
“Speaking of which, my little brother is seriously infuriating.” Ji Xinghui opened a bottle of red wine and sighed. “Nuonuo, be my little brother instead. I’ll give you an allowance too.”
Why did all the good things happen to Fu Baihan? Couldn’t he have a sweet little brother too?
Fu Baihan ignored him and set dessert next to Su Nuo’s hand.
“Is it Ji Xinghai?” When Ji Xinghui brought it up, Su Nuo suddenly remembered the name.
In his past life, even after the Fu family was gone and he was too grief-stricken to think about anything else, he had tried to go to Ji Xinghui for help. But by then, when he went to the Ji family, he couldn’t reach Ji Xinghui anymore. Ji Xinghai had taken control of the family, and the staff told him Ji Xinghui had gone abroad.
“How do you know him, Nuonuo?” Ji Xinghui was surprised.
The illegitimate kids in his family were all restless, but with him running the company, the old man didn’t dare bring any of them home. The only one forcibly brought into the house was Ji Xinghai. Ever since then, there’d been no peace at home, so Ji Xinghui simply moved out to avoid getting caught in the crossfire between his parents.
If you asked him, a family like this wasn’t worth holding together. Ji Xinghai was quiet at home, but he couldn’t hide that he was a wolf cub at heart.
But Ji Xinghui hadn’t even told Fu Baihan about this. How did Su Nuo know?
Su Nuo stayed calm. “I heard some people talking about it at the club that day.”
Thinking about that crowd of his, Ji Xinghui didn’t suspect anything. He’d probably complained about it while drunk, and Ji Xinghai had once come to pick him up and met them.
Ji Xinghui had been so annoyed by his half-brother lately that his face turned sour. “I really regret not having his mom dragged off to the hospital when she showed up pregnant at our door.”
Get rid of it right then and there, and be done with it.
“Because you were still in kindergarten back then,” Fu Baihan pointed out rationally.
Su Nuo carefully warned him, “Star-ge, keep an eye on him. If he managed to get into the house, he’s definitely not someone simple.”
Ji Xinghui laughed. “Nuonuo’s worrying about this kind of stuff now? It’s fine. He can’t stir up any real trouble.”
He could crush a few guys like Ji Xinghai.
He was just sick of dealing with his parents’ messy drama and didn’t want to keep cleaning up after them over and over. So he left Ji Xinghai there and let them fight it out among themselves.
The old man’s shares weren’t enough to call the shots at the company. Even if he wanted to set Ji Xinghai up somewhere, it was up to Ji Xinghui whether he agreed.
Ji Xinghui still couldn’t help being jealous of Fu Baihan. Who wouldn’t be, next to someone who had such a perfect, winning life?
Loving parents, a harmonious family, and on top of that, a soft, adorable little brother.
Could he steal Nuonuo away? Ji Xinghui wondered.
A little cutie like this, not as a lover, just to keep around and play with, would be great stress relief.
“Baihan, I’ve been so miserable lately. Lend me Nuonuo for a while… ow.”
After a swift kick, Ji Xinghui didn’t dare say another word.
