Chapter 4: The Encounter

Su Nuo carefully went over everything from his past life. As the saying goes, know yourself and know your enemy, and you’ll win every battle. He didn’t think Su Yujin would let him off this time.

Su Yujin used the system to steal his destiny after Fu Baihan’s accident, when the Fu family fell apart. After losing his beloved wife and son one after the other, Fu Mingyuan couldn’t hold on long enough to come back and take charge. Later, lost in grief, he too died in a car accident. But he left a clear will: apart from what had been donated, all the remaining property and shares went to Su Nuo.

Su Nuo knew how much the Fu parents loved and protected him. When disaster struck the Fu family, he was the only one left. He was drowning in grief, and then the Su family took him away. During that time, his mental state got so bad that he needed medication. By the time he remembered the assets Fu Mingyuan had left him, the Fu family’s distant relatives had already split everything up and thrown him out. In the end, he couldn’t even step inside the house he had lived in for so many years to take one last look.

When all of this happened, he was just a kid who had barely become an adult, alone with no one to help him. How could he fight those Fu relatives who had been blinded by greed?

He had tried asking the Su family for help, but Su Yujin told him not to fuss over that property. After all, he wasn’t a Fu family child, and if word got out, it would hurt the Su family’s reputation. Su Nuo was so angry he shook all over, but the Su parents and his older brother all agreed with Su Yujin, and even thought Su Nuo was the greedy one.

Having lost everything, Su Nuo only wanted to keep the Fu family’s main house. But those relatives threw out Su Jing’s beloved piano and sold off the antiques and paintings Fu Mingyuan had collected for years. Nothing of his or Fu Baihan’s was left. He was too weak to protect the things that mattered to him. He didn’t even have the right to keep a few things to remember them by.

Su Nuo never wanted to relive that despair again.

From then on, Su Yujin became more and more reckless. If at first he still kept up an act in front of Su Nuo, later on he openly looked down on him.

Was it because Su Nuo had lost the Fu family’s protection and hit rock bottom that Su Yujin was able to steal his destiny completely?

Then was the Fu family’s tragedy just bad luck, or was someone behind it?

Could Su Yujin really be powerful enough to make Fu Baihan’s flight crash?

Even though it was only a guess, it still made Su Nuo’s skin crawl.

Su Yujin was a madman, a madman truly blinded by greed.

Fu Baihan noticed that the kid didn’t like going out anymore. He had become super clingy too, following him everywhere.

Didn’t he use to love going to parties? The kind where he’d stay out all night if he could?

Suspecting the kid had been bullied outside, Fu Baihan quietly asked around. It turned out Su Nuo’s friends hadn’t done anything to upset him, yet he had deleted a whole bunch of them.

Even though he couldn’t figure out what teenage boys were thinking, Fu Baihan could understand why Su Nuo was so clingy. A few days ago, he had almost boarded that deadly flight.

So Fu Baihan was extremely patient with his little shadow.

Right, the kid must have been scared half to death.

But understanding it was one thing. The fear didn’t go away that easily. So Fu Baihan just let him tag along, to help him feel safe.

Being needed by his little brother made President Fu work even more efficiently.

Make money, buy the whole entertainment industry for my little brother.

Su Nuo: “…” That’s really not necessary.

Fu Baihan was reading documents, while Su Nuo leaned back on the sofa in his office, sipping the milk tea one of the secretaries had bought him and happily playing games. A man in a sharp suit working, and a boy in casual clothes gaming, each in his own corner of the bright, spacious CEO office. It was a very peaceful picture.

Su Nuo sat up and rubbed his eyes. Seeing it was almost time to clock out, he closed his game and scooted over next to Fu Baihan.

He poked him. When Fu Baihan didn’t react, Su Nuo just started making even more trouble.

Fu Baihan caught his wrist, his eyes full of fond helplessness. “Behave.”

Su Nuo made him look at the time. “It’s almost quitting time, Brother.”

“I still have some things to finish. If you’re hungry, order food first,” Fu Baihan said, like he’d done this many times before.

Having spent the whole day doing nothing but eating, the little young master pulled his hand free and put his hands on his hips without any shame. “Say no to 9-to-9, six days a week! Say no to working 24/7! I hope this capitalist can find his conscience again!”

Fu Baihan laughed. “I’m a heartless capitalist? Then where did the money for your car come from?”

“Hmph. Hurry up and clock out, or the secretaries will have to stay late with you.” Su Nuo had a point.

Fu Baihan saved his file, shut down the computer, stood up, and flicked his forehead. “You’re the only one who’s so sweet to the ladies. No wonder they’re always hoping you’ll drop by.”

Whenever Su Nuo showed up, the whole secretary office lit up. Now Fu Baihan finally understood why.

After he left with the kid, the secretaries exchanged knowing looks.

We knew it, the little young master is a workaholic’s kryptonite, hehe.

Sure, overtime came with overtime pay, but who wouldn’t be happy to leave early and have some time for themselves?

Working as President Fu’s secretary, it didn’t matter whether you were a man or a woman. He never looked twice at anyone and worked everyone just as hard. But following Fu family tradition, they only hired married secretaries, to avoid a lot of trouble.

The secretaries all loved seeing Su Nuo. President Fu was handsome in the coolest, most manly way, but a pretty boy was a whole different vibe.

Besides, every time he came, the little young master would smile and call them “big sis.” It was way too sweet.

Su Nuo hadn’t even debuted yet and he already had a fanbase of big-sister fans. Congratulations were in order.

“What do you want to eat?” Fu Baihan asked once they were in the car.

“You’re not cooking today, Brother?” Su Nuo blinked, hinting very hard.

Eating out every day didn’t feel like home at all.

The Fu family’s old mansion was huge, with a butler and housekeepers, but it was far out in the suburbs. To make work easier, Fu Baihan mostly lived in a place near the company. Every time he rolled up his sleeves to cook, he had this strange feeling, like he was raising a kid without even being married.

Su Nuo knew that in the original plot, his college ex-boyfriend, the one Su Yujin stole from him, was another main character. But next to Fu Baihan, every ex-boyfriend looked pathetic.

If my brother were still around, would you even get to be the main character?

Not as good-looking as my brother, not as talented either, and he cheated on me with Su Yujin. What a blind idiot.

They made a detour to the supermarket. Su Nuo pushed the cart and quickly tossed in a pile of snacks before Fu Baihan could say no.

Fu Baihan gave the kid a half-smile and put back every single thing he wasn’t allowed to eat.

“Let’s get some celery. Nuonuo, you love celery the most, right?” Fu Baihan’s voice was gentle.

Su Nuo shrank back and obediently let him go through the cart. “Brother, I was wrong.”

“Quick to say sorry, never actually changes.” Fu Baihan pinched his cheek. After the lecture, he made up for it by grabbing a box of Su Nuo’s favorite ice cream. “This is for the whole week. Don’t eat too much.”

Su Nuo handed the cart over to him. “You’re the best, Brother.”

Fu Baihan glanced to the side. Two girls who had been secretly taking photos of them covered their mouths, faces bright red. “S-sorry!”

Waaah, these two are so hot, and so sweet! But wait, the shorter one called the taller one “Brother”? So they’re not a couple, they’re brothers?

Su Nuo smiled, his eyes curving. “It’s okay. Keep them for yourselves, just don’t post them online, okay?”

The girls almost screamed and nodded over and over, completely charmed by him.

“Let’s go.” Fu Baihan grabbed the back of the kid’s collar and steered him toward the vegetable section.

He was seriously starting to wonder if, one day, his kid would end up like the spoiled rich sons of his business partners, with a whole crowd of girls chasing after him.

Nope. He had to keep a closer eye on him.

Su Nuo stumbled a couple of steps and bumped his arm into someone next to him. Without thinking, he said, “Sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

The moment he heard that familiar voice, Su Nuo froze. He took a deep breath, kept his face under control, and looked over.

Su Yujin!

The Su family didn’t even live around here. How could he run into Su Yujin at the supermarket?!

Su Nuo wanted nothing more than to rip off Su Yujin’s fake nice-guy mask right then and there, but he knew very well that the best move right now was to act like he didn’t know anything.

The enemy was out in the open while he stayed hidden. That was his biggest advantage.

Su Yujin hadn’t just transmigrated into the book. He also had a system, which was seriously creepy. Until Su Nuo figured out a way to take Su Yujin down for good, he couldn’t let on that he knew the plot too.

Little did he know, Su Yujin was sizing him up as well, frantically calling for the system in his head.

“System, didn’t you say you could make Fu Baihan’s plane crash and get rid of him? Why is he still alive and well, and why hasn’t anything happened to the Fu family?”

“The Book Transmigration System only provides a one-time starter gift at the beginning: removing the biggest threat in the original world. You have not yet obtained the protagonist’s halo. Insufficient energy. This action cannot be repeated.” The system’s robotic voice echoed in Su Yujin’s head.

Su Yujin was furious. “That’s a scam! With the Fu family still around, how am I supposed to go after Su Nuo? The halo on him is so bright it’s practically blinding me!”

System: “Unknown error. Reporting now. Please wait patiently, host. Insufficient energy. The report may fail. It is recommended that you obtain the protagonist’s halo as soon as possible.”

Su Yujin was beside himself. “What a garbage system!”

Su Nuo turned away, hooked his arm through Fu Baihan’s, bit his lip, and said quietly, “Brother, let’s go.”

Fu Baihan sensed something was off. He glanced at Su Yujin, not understanding why his kid had started acting so strange after bumping into this guy.

Even after they got home and finished dinner, Su Nuo was still in a bad mood. Fu Baihan put the dishes in the dishwasher, found the kid zoning out on the balcony, and went over to ruffle his hair.

“Nuonuo, what’s wrong?” Fu Baihan asked gently.

“Brother…” Su Nuo looked up at him. “The guy I bumped into at the supermarket today, did you get a good look at him?”

“Yeah. Is something wrong with him?”

Su Nuo looked into Fu Baihan’s eyes. “Do you think he’s good-looking? Would you like him?”

Fu Baihan looked confused at first, then quickly broke into a laugh. “You’re upset because of that?”

Su Nuo didn’t know how to keep asking. But before the disappointment could even sink in, he heard Fu Baihan’s gentle voice: “Of course our Nuonuo is the best-looking. Okay, little narcissist, come have some fruit.”
