Chapter 65: The White Lotus Has a Fit

The Su house looked exactly the same, but the way he was treated was completely different.

In his past life, he’d been at rock bottom, stripped of all protection, and these relatives he shared blood with had seen him as nothing but extra baggage. Now that he was the Fu family’s little young master, they were all hesitantly eager to see him.

So this was what it felt like to have someone in your corner? The Fu family really was his source of confidence.

His so-called birth parents were just fair-weather people who treated others based on what they could get.

Su Nuo suddenly felt a lot lighter. Standing on completely different ground, he could look at them and see that nothing they did could affect him.

He didn’t care. He’d already received all the family love he needed from the Fu elders.

Mrs. Su had complicated feelings about this son. Because of how the Fu family had been obstructing them lately, she’d even started to feel a bit resentful. He was clearly their child, yet he’d taken someone else’s side and refused to acknowledge them.

Sure, they weren’t as rich as the Fu family, but they were his real parents! How could this kid be so cold?

But when she saw Su Nuo, saw his face so like her own, the strange pull of blood spread through her heart. Her eyes stung, and tears fell.

This was her son. A living, breathing child, so different from the photos. The child she’d carried for nine months and given birth to, and then lost.

Mr. Su seemed calmer. He’d never paid much attention to his children. Apart from his eldest son, whom he often talked to about work, even Su Yujin hadn’t gotten much of his time or attention growing up.

That was exactly why he’d been the first to agree to send Su Yujin away.

He wasn’t as emotional as Mrs. Su. If you were going to raise a son, of course it should be your own.

Besides, Su Yujin’s birth mother was the criminal who’d stolen his son. There was no way he could keep being nice to Su Yujin.

All his past indulgence and affection had been because Su Yujin was his son, had a flawless personality, and had always gotten good grades, giving him a sense of pride as a father.

Mr. Su believed that by not making this public and even giving Su Yujin an apartment, he’d more than repaid all those years of raising him. He’d done everything he could.

He studied Su Nuo, this child who truly shared his blood, and couldn’t help marveling. The Fu family had raised him well. He carried himself as well as any heir from a wealthy family, and still had the youthful liveliness of his age.

But this child’s heart might not belong with their family.

Mr. Su wasn’t stupid. He didn’t believe a child important enough for the entire Fu family to warn him openly and behind the scenes could be some useless nobody. The fact that the Fu family valued him this much showed how exceptional he was. If it had just been charity for appearances, they wouldn’t refuse to let go even after meeting the boy’s birth parents.

Either way, beyond the closeness of blood, he also saw more opportunity and profit in Su Nuo.

Even the scraps that slipped through the Fu family’s fingers would be enough to make the Su family soar. With an opportunity like this right in front of him, he couldn’t help thinking about it.

Using this child as a reason to keep in touch, there was a good chance of getting in with the Fu family.

After all, the Fu family’s hint to him had been very clear. As long as they treated Su Nuo well, the Fu family would make business easier for them.

Mrs. Su, in tears, tried to hug Su Nuo, but he sidestepped her. She became even more distraught and looked at him. “Won’t you forgive Mom and Dad?”

Su Nuo shook his head. “We don’t know each other.”

Mrs. Su broke down and grabbed his hand without another word. “I’m your mother. I really didn’t mean to lose you…”

No matter what, Su Nuo couldn’t shake off a crying woman right there, so he had to put up with it.

Su Yuchen put an arm around his mother and comforted her. “Mom, he just got home. Don’t do this.”

Su Nuo was pretty surprised Su Yuchen stepped in to help. In his past life, during all his fights with Su Yujin, Su Yuchen had always been like a background extra. He hadn’t been nasty to Su Nuo like the others, but whenever Su Yujin cried, he’d tell Su Nuo not to go too far.

And now he was calling Su Nuo his “little brother” without being asked. If Su Yujin heard that, he’d probably have a heart attack on the spot.

Su Yujin was extremely possessive of the fish in his pond, even Su Yuchen, his brother in name. He’d used every trick in the book to keep Su Yuchen away from Su Nuo, so that Su Yuchen would only ever be his brother.

Su Nuo suddenly thought: “…” Wait. Could Su Yujin and Su Yuchen’s brotherly love have actually turned into something romantic?

After all, Su Nuo was currently trying to make a move on his own big brother. It was hard not to read into it.

But even if there was something there, it was probably Su Yuchen secretly pining while Su Yujin just used him as a tool. Su Yujin’s real destined match was Chu Boyan.

“Mom, Dad, Brother, I’m home…” From the doorway came the housekeeper’s quiet explanation and Su Yujin’s familiar greeting.

When he saw Su Nuo, he seemed badly startled. The things in his hands fell to the floor, obviously gifts he’d brought for the family. His face instantly went pale, his expression full of wounded restraint. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know Brother Su Nuo would be here…”

To Mrs. Su, both boys were her flesh and blood, so to speak. Besides, she’d raised Su Yujin for eighteen years. Feelings like that couldn’t just disappear.

She wiped her tears and went over. “Look at you. If you’re here, you’re here. What are you saying?”

Su Yujin’s eyes were red. “Mom… it’s my fault. Brother Su Nuo definitely doesn’t want to see me.”

Su Nuo: “?”

Unbelievable. The stage isn’t even set up and you’ve already started performing. I guess getting into film school takes some basic skills after all.

Su Nuo didn’t believe for a second that Su Yujin hadn’t known he’d be here today. The way Su Yujin was acting, he’d clearly come on purpose to provoke him.

In his past life, Su Yujin had played the victim just like this while showing him around the Su house, all the while making it clear that the Su family hadn’t bothered to prepare anything for him and that the best room belonged to Su Yujin.

Now that he’d been kicked out, he’d switched to a “coming home to visit” script. Very adaptable.

Su Nuo wasn’t angry. He just felt a little nauseated.

Like how people aren’t scared of flies, but they still find them annoying.

Su Nuo smiled and said innocently, “Why are you calling me ‘brother’? Which little brother is this? Was he born after bad people stole me away and switched me?”

The room went painfully awkward. Even Mrs. Su didn’t know what to say.

What could she say? That he wasn’t his real brother, but the son of the woman who’d stolen him?

Su Yuchen cleared his throat. “Mom, shouldn’t we eat? He’s probably hungry.”

Mrs. Su let go of Su Yujin’s arm. “Yes, yes, I have soup on the stove. Nuonuo, stay for lunch?”

Su Nuo wasn’t really interested, but seeing Su Yujin’s face twist, he suddenly felt cheerful and agreed. “Sure.”

“Is he staying for lunch too?” Su Nuo lifted his chin, looking haughty. “Didn’t you say today it would just be you meeting me?”

Su Yujin’s tears fell, and he even clutched his chest as if he couldn’t breathe. “Brother Su Nuo, I’m sorry. I just wanted to see Mom, Dad, and Brother. If you hate me, I’ll leave right now.”

“Okay. Then leave,” Su Nuo said without hesitation.

The whole Su family was stunned. There was no question about it: at their very first meeting, Su Nuo had completely shattered every assumption they’d had about him.

“Why aren’t you leaving?” Su Nuo looked at Su Yujin, puzzled on the outside, while the little devil inside him was rolling around laughing.

So telling off a white lotus was this much fun.

He could have fought fire with fire, of course, but acting opposite Su Yujin was a waste of time. Better to be direct and finish him in one blow.

Su Yujin choked up. “I haven’t seen Mom and Dad in so long. I just wanted to have a meal together as a family.”

Su Nuo: “If you’re not leaving, then weren’t you just lying to me?”

Su Yujin: “…”

As long as I’m not embarrassed, someone else will be. Su Nuo was living proof of that truth.

Whatever the Su family thought, he was perfectly comfortable.

“Brother Su Nuo, try this. It’s my favorite dish. We make it at home all the time.” Su Yujin switched expressions and acted very warm during the meal.

Su Nuo raised an eyebrow. This was Su Yujin’s signature trick: using all sorts of little details to tell Su Nuo that they were the real family, making him feel left out.

“Oh, thanks.” Su Nuo didn’t even look up. “At the orphanage I often didn’t get enough to eat. Looks like you had a much happier life.”

Coming from Su Nuo, that was like a slap across their faces.

Their real son had been stolen and suffered so much, and on his very first day home, they’d let the culprit’s son show off the life he’d enjoyed in his place.

Even Su Yuchen, the most easygoing of them all, felt sick about it and looked at Su Yujin disapprovingly. After lunch, he pulled him aside. “Yujin, go home for now.”

Su Yujin’s eyes glistened with tears. “Brother, you’re kicking me out?”

Su Yuchen didn’t answer. He only said, “You shouldn’t have come today.”

He’d clearly told Su Yujin that today was the day Su Nuo was coming home.

Some little tricks are easy to see through once you look past the rose-tinted glasses of affection.

But Su Yuchen didn’t think too much of it. He understood how insecure Su Yujin must feel with his whole identity suddenly upended, and he tried to comfort him. “Yujin, we’re not kicking you out. You’re still family. But for now, please don’t show up around Nuonuo, okay?”

“Brother, I’m the one who grew up with you!” Su Yujin cried. “You’ve loved me most my whole life. Now you don’t want me anymore because of him?!”

If Su Nuo had heard that, he would’ve thought: how familiar. Isn’t that the exact line I used on Fu Baihan?

But Su Yuchen wasn’t Fu Baihan. He didn’t indulge Su Yujin unconditionally.

Su Yuchen had to admit that after meeting Su Nuo, besides a sense of closeness, all he felt was endless guilt.

And every word out of Su Yujin’s mouth only deepened that guilt, reminding him of everything his real brother had missed out on all these years.
