Ji Shileng thought it over for a moment, then assured the assistant that he understood.
“It’s fine. If A-Kuan has something to attend to, he should go ahead. I’m hardly going to run off”
The assistant breathed a small sigh of relief.
Good heavens, this was a major client, a man with deep pockets, the God of Wealth himself!
What if they offended him and he got so angry he stopped spending?
“Thank you for understanding, Mr. Leng,” the assistant said with a smile.
Ji Shileng said nothing more and leafed through a couple of pages.
There weren’t many women in the S tier, but he noticed a few things the women in the files had in common.
Most were thirty or younger, with impressive résumés and striking looks.
Honestly, Ji Shileng couldn’t imagine what would drive women with so much going for them to push themselves into a place like this.
When the God of Wealth kept his eyes on the files without saying a word, the assistant asked solicitously, “Do they fall short of your requirements, Mr. Leng?”
“Do you have anyone better?”
Ji Shileng looked up at him.
The assistant hastily waved his hands.
“No… As of now, every woman who meets the S-tier requirements is already on that list”
Then, thinking on his feet, he added, “If none of them appeals to you and you’re in no rush, we could wait a little longer”
“Wait a little longer?”
“Yes. As Brother Kuan just said, our phones ring off the hook every day”
The assistant took out his communicator and checked with him once more before making a note.
“Shall I put you down to see the next batch of profiles, Mr. Leng?”
Ji Shileng: “…”
He set the files down, looking a little troubled.
“I can’t say anyone here particularly appeals to me”
“Put me down for the next batch, please”
In truth, he was just trying to buy more time.
The assistant nodded understandingly.
“Of course. It’s perfectly normal to have high standards”
It would have been suspicious if a man with that much money had been too easy to please.
Every God of Wealth the assistant had dealt with before had been fussy, without exception.
Plenty of them already had wives but had never had a son. Unimpressed by their mistresses’ genes, they felt they had no choice but to pick out some high-quality eggs and hire a surrogate.
When it came to choosing a future heir, these men were as demanding as they could possibly be.
Ji Shileng only had one requirement about birth charts. He was nowhere near their most troublesome client.
“When should I expect to hear about the next batch?”
“Next Monday”
Worried Ji Shileng might think that was too long, the assistant explained, “We have to interview the women who contact us and give them medical exams. We only put them on the list once they’ve cleared both”
Ji Shileng: “…”
It did sound rather sophisticated, he had to admit.
Then again, after more than a decade in business, they’d had plenty of time to iron out every detail.
“That’s fine. Please get in touch with us when the list is ready”
Ji Shileng straightened the stack of files and set it on the desk.
“Of course. It’s no trouble at all”
Doing business with a God of Wealth who had money and was happy to spend it was a pleasure, the assistant thought. Best of all, this one was easy to talk to.
He’d had more than enough of those nitpicking idiots.
“If it’s convenient, could I look at the A-, B-, and C-tier files?”
Curious, Ji Shileng asked outright.
“I’d like to see what sets them apart”
The assistant had thought Ji Shileng was about to raise a concern. It turned out to be a simple request.
“Of course. Just say the word if there’s anything you want to see”
He opened a drawer and took out three stacks of files.
The B and C tiers had by far the most names, considerably more than S and A.
“There isn’t much difference between S and A, really,” the assistant explained. “We just have slightly higher physical requirements for the S tier”
Ji Shileng compared an S-tier list with an A-tier one. The qualifications on both were impressive, so he took the opportunity to ask, “What do you mean by that?”
“The women in better physical condition have their eggs retrieved without a painkiller injection”
The assistant said it as casually as if he were talking about buying vegetables that morning.
“Those who aren’t quite as fit and can’t get through it without a painkiller shot go into the A tier”
Ji Shileng frowned slightly.
Su Ke had been listening in the entire time. At that, he choked on his own saliva.
What the hell did he mean, egg retrieval without painkillers?!
Did this guy even hear himself?
Ji Shileng feigned confusion.
“Does getting a painkiller injection make any difference to the eggs?”
The assistant paused, seemingly surprised anyone would ask.
He answered honestly, “It doesn’t affect the quality of the eggs. The main difference is whether it hurts”
“As for why we split them into S and A…”
He trailed off and gave Ji Shileng a knowing look.
Ji Shileng: “…”
He got it.
It was probably just another way to fleece rich people.
Plenty of them insisted on keeping everything as natural as possible when it came to having children and worried that a painkiller injection might affect the mother’s physical condition.
Ji Shileng had no interest in looking through the files any further. He had little sympathy for people who didn’t take care of their own bodies.
“I’ve seen enough”
He straightened the files and handed them back to the assistant.
“Do we head back now?”
Anxious to give the God of Wealth a proper reception, the assistant put the files away and straightened up.
“Would you be interested in seeing how our laboratory operates, Mr. Leng?”
Ji Shileng rose.
“I would. Are you saying we can have a tour?”
The assistant led them out.
“Of course you can take a look around”
“You’ve already paid the deposit, after all. I don’t have to worry about you running off, do I?”
Their Gods of Wealth always got their full attention.
Ji Shileng followed him out.
“Thank you for going to the trouble”
“No trouble at all. You’re too kind, Mr. Leng”
The assistant took on the role of tour guide.
“This floor is our office area. There really isn’t much to see here”
There was another elevator tucked away inside. Ji Shileng was quietly amazed.
Gaopei Laboratory had clearly spent a fortune building this underground surrogacy facility.
And it was far larger than he’d imagined.
The assistant had a way with words and was considerably wittier than A-Kuan.
Put simply, he knew how to flatter people and laid it on thick.
“Mr. Leng, this is the floor where we retrieve the eggs. The screams can be a little piercing”
The assistant put it as delicately as he could.
Ji Shileng nodded. Remembering what the man had said in the office, he asked, “So all the egg retrievals on this floor are done without painkiller injections?”
The assistant led him farther in, perfectly composed.
“Yes. I’ll take you to meet our doctors first”
There were noticeably more people on this floor.
Whether it was to preserve the quality of the eggs or to keep germs at bay, the entire floor was cold enough to make Ji Shileng shiver.
