Chapter 98: For the Rest of Our Lives

Su Nuo’s attention snapped over. He blinked, as if he hadn’t quite processed it, and repeated, “She’s been caught?”

“Yes. She’d changed her name and household registration, or she’d have been found sooner,” Fu Baihan explained briefly.

The Su family had done nothing about the nanny who’d swapped the babies years ago. They’d even found Su Yujin kind and filial for tearfully begging them to spare her. The Fu family wasn’t about to let Su Nuo suffer that kind of injustice. They’d worked directly with the police and made sure she was caught.

A nanny who swapped her employer’s child, then took him away and abandoned him, nearly killing their little treasure outright. The Fu family would never stand by and do nothing about that.

He’d been abandoned as a newborn, so Su Nuo couldn’t possibly remember the woman. But just thinking that she was the reason he’d grown up struggling in an orphanage in a remote little town, and that her son was the reason he’d been cast adrift in his past life, betrayed and crushed… Su Nuo could hardly contain his hatred.

Even though he’d later landed in a nest of good fortune and grown up pampered and protected by the Fu family, none of that could erase what she’d done.

Just because the victim was lucky enough to survive, should the perpetrator be forgiven?

“Do they know?” Su Nuo was curious.

Fu Baihan knew who he meant. They had no expectations of the Su family and even had to guard against their interference, so naturally the news hadn’t reached them.

He shook his head. “They don’t. We can let them know.”

The corners of Su Nuo’s lips curved. “Let’s wait a bit, Ge. I want her to go to prison.”

“She should go to prison anyway,” Fu Baihan reassured his little treasure. “The Fu Group’s legal team is ready. She’ll get a heavy sentence.”

“Mm.” Su Nuo felt the knot in his chest loosen.

What he’d hated most in his past life was how the Su family had handled this. The nanny had shown up on her own, and not only did the Su family not hold her accountable, they’d even wanted to treat her like a relative. Su Nuo found it utterly absurd.

He’d understood with perfect clarity that he meant nothing to the Su family. Even though he shared their blood, the only one they cared about was Su Yujin.

The Su family would rather get along with a thief and the thief’s child than give him even a scrap of fairness.

Relative? Ugh. Enjoy prison.

He’d once loathed his own helplessness, unable to make her pay, and it had tormented him. Now he found it wasn’t so hard after all. He sighed. “Ge, I’m so useless.”

“That’s right, you can’t even drive.” Fu Baihan patted his head while they waited at a red light. “When’s it your turn to drive me around?”

Su Nuo: “…Just focus on driving!”

Melancholy? What melancholy? Wasn’t being his brother’s useless little sidekick fun? The answer: way too fun.

At home he curled up on the sofa playing games while waiting for dinner. Fu Baihan came out with washed fruit. “Auntie’s asking what you want to eat tomorrow.”

Su Nuo thought for a moment. “Tomorrow I’m doing the shoot with Xi Zhou and eating out. Tell Auntie she doesn’t need to make me anything.”

“Playing games right before dinner.” Fu Baihan pinched the kid’s cheek.

“It’ll be quick. I’m playing with Xi Zhou, I can go AFK in a bit.” Su Nuo grinned and tugged at Fu Baihan’s sleeve. “Ge, lean down a little.”

“Hm?” Fu Baihan didn’t understand but did as asked, bending down.

“Mwah~” Su Nuo kissed his lips, then glanced at the kitchen where Auntie was still cooking, and giggled. “Exciting, right?”

Xi Zhou’s lifeless voice came through the phone. “I’m begging you, turn off team voice chat.”

Saying you’d go AFK right in front of him was bad enough, and now this endless lovey-dovey stuff!

Just wait. When my girlfriend’s back, I’m getting even for this PDA! Xi Zhou ground his teeth.

“Oops, forgot you were there.” Su Nuo sounded pleased and smug. “Next time just turn off your sound.”

Xi Zhou didn’t dare complain about this spoiled brat, afraid Fu Baihan would overhear and kill him, so he swallowed it. Once the match started he went absolutely beast mode and carried them to victory.

Having been carried to a win, Su Nuo said cheerfully, “I’m off to eat. We’ll rank up more after the shoot tomorrow.”

Xi Zhou mustered his courage. “Is that how you ask someone to carry you?”

“Huh? Fine if you won’t. You’re not the only jungle king I’ve got.” Su Nuo was smug. “Ge, play games with me tomorrow?”

“Depends how you behave.” Fu Baihan picked him up and carried him toward the dining room.

“My slippers…” Su Nuo dangled his feet and rubbed them against Fu Baihan’s pant leg.

“Eat your dinner.” Fu Baihan set him down on a dining chair and went back to get his slippers.

Auntie washed her hands and came out. “Nuonuo, after dinner put the dishes in the dishwasher. I’ll clean up tomorrow.”

“Okay, okay. Thank you, Auntie. Be careful getting home.” Su Nuo nodded obediently.

“It’s no trouble. Just tell me if there’s anything you want to eat. You’ve gotten so thin lately, I don’t know how I’ll explain it to madam.” Auntie had come over from the old house and knew them both well, so she spoke freely and often nagged him to eat more.

Su Nuo explained with a smile, “I’m about to start filming. I need to be thinner for the camera, so I’m dieting.”

Auntie muttered, “So thin already and still dieting…” She sounded full of regret that she couldn’t fatten the kid up in a single bite.

After dinner, to prove he wasn’t a useless little sidekick, Su Nuo cleaned the dining table spotless, poured a glass of lemon water, and went to the study to find Fu Baihan and get praised.

Fu Baihan pulled the kid onto his lap. “My sweetie’s so hardworking.”

Su Nuo poked his shoulder. “Of course. You know you got a great deal, right?”

With a boyfriend as great as me, you should be secretly celebrating!

Casually glancing at the documents on his computer screen, Su Nuo decided it was a good thing he hadn’t joined the company. Reading scripts was way easier than reading business plans.

After keeping him company for a while, Su Nuo left his boyfriend a kiss and quickly slipped away.

He didn’t dare interrupt. It would be bad if he affected the Fu Group’s future.

The shoot Xi Zhou had arranged for him was with a very popular domestic fashion magazine. Su Nuo looked into the theme ahead of time and did his homework while chatting on and off with Xi Zhou.

“Is your brother next to you?” Xi Zhou asked.

Su Nuo replied, “Nope.”

Xi Zhou breathed a sigh of relief and turned serious. He felt he was something of an “elder” to Su Nuo, and some things had to be said, even if they weren’t pleasant to hear.

“Are you serious about Fu Baihan?”

Su Nuo typed each word deliberately: “Of course. The kind of serious where I spend my whole life with him.”

If Su Jing had seen that, she’d probably have remarked that they were truly made for the same family. Fu Baihan had told people he was planning to get married, and Su Nuo was talking about a lifetime. A perfect match.

But Xi Zhou didn’t know how Fu Baihan felt. He was only offering advice from the most basic outsider’s perspective. Seeing how completely smitten Su Nuo was, he knew there was no talking him out of it.

Honestly, young people doing reckless things wasn’t surprising, but that kind of romance didn’t necessarily last. Xi Zhou had grown up in a big family like this and seen too much. He didn’t have much faith in Fu Baihan.

As a brother, Fu Baihan was perfect. As a lover, not necessarily.

Love was the least reliable thing in an elite family.

“Kiddo, take my advice. Don’t get too invested, or you’ll get really hurt later.” Fu Baihan could treat it as a fling and walk away anytime without consequence, but Su Nuo probably couldn’t be so carefree. He was clearly the guileless one who’d get played.

Su Nuo knew Xi Zhou was saying this for his own good. Otherwise he’d never dare speculate badly about Fu Baihan. He was clearly taking Su Nuo’s side completely.

Suddenly Su Nuo felt wronged on Fu Baihan’s behalf. Just dating someone, why did he keep getting doubted for not being sincere? Just because he was the heir to the Fu Group? Just because he usually came across as emotionally distant?

Hmph, you have no idea how good my brother is!

Su Nuo calmly asked back, “Is that how it is with you and Sis Xuanxuan?”

Xi Zhou immediately denied it. “Of course not! Xuanxuan and I are serious.”

“He and I are serious too. If you say that again, I’ll get mad,” Su Nuo replied.

Xi Zhou could see how firm he was. After all, he’d been bad-mouthing Fu Baihan behind his back, and he felt a little ashamed. He apologized. “Sorry, Nuonuo. I won’t say it again.”

Thinking it over, with the way Fu Baihan usually doted on Su Nuo, he didn’t seem like someone who’d treat him badly. Besides, there’d never been any romantic gossip about Fu Baihan. He’d always been the most upright, untouchable flower among the elite families.

All right. They were sweet together, and he wasn’t going to keep being a nuisance. A rebellious kid like Su Nuo wouldn’t turn back until he hit a wall. Even if the worst happened someday, he still had friends like them. They’d never let him end up miserable.

Xi Zhou gave up trying to persuade him because of Su Nuo’s firm stance, not because he truly believed Fu Baihan and Su Nuo would love each other forever. He was afraid that if he pushed Su Nuo too far, Su Nuo would stop talking to him, so he knew better than to keep bringing it up.

After talking with Su Nuo, Xi Zhou messaged his girlfriend instead. “Our kiddo’s flown the nest.”

Zhou Xuanxuan: “?” What nonsense is this?

“Nuonuo’s dating someone, and it’s someone tough. You’ll never guess. I told him not to enter hell mode, but he won’t listen,” Xi Zhou rambled on.

Zhou Xuanxuan was curious. “Who?” If she’d known Su Nuo was dating, she’d have gone back with him to check things out.

Xi Zhou: “Can’t say. Ask him yourself later.”

Zhou Xuanxuan was exasperated. “Xi Zhou, get lost.”

That’s it? Get me curious and then refuse to tell me? You might as well not have said anything at all!

Xi Zhou, humbled: “Baby, I’m sorry.”

“Get lost!”

Su Nuo had no idea what Xi Zhou had been through to keep his romance a secret. If he’d known, he’d definitely have told him: Are you dumb? What’s wrong with telling Sis Xuanxuan?

That was why he sometimes questioned his friend’s intelligence. How on earth had he gotten into a top university abroad?

He was showing off his relationship this obviously. Did he care if a few more friends knew? Xi Zhou, you dummy.
