Chapter 19: You Want a Divorce Too, Don’t You?

Fang Fengzhi looked at the balance in his bank account. He had saved quite a bit during his two years of marriage to Fu Baiqi, but it was still not enough.

Fu Baiqi’s mother had made her position perfectly clear. She knew her son was dissatisfied with him and that he had been spending his time with Bai Zhen, but neither mattered to her. All she wanted was a child of pure Fu blood. She would never agree to a divorce now—or later.

But if Fang Fengzhi repaid everything he had borrowed from the Fu family, he would owe them nothing. Then Fu Baiqi’s mother could no longer use the debt to pressure him.

The problem was that, with his pitiful salary, even scrimping and saving would take another year or more before he could barely scrape together enough.

On his way home, he called Fu Baiqi. He wanted to talk.

No matter how many times he called, no one answered. He sent messages instead, with the same result.

He was wondering when he should muster the nerve to visit the company again. Unexpectedly, two days later, he came home to a strong, familiar pheromone scent. Inside, Fu Baiqi was sitting in the living room.

Before Fang Fengzhi could speak, Fu Baiqi asked, “Why didn’t you answer your phone?”

Fang Fengzhi thought back. Several unfamiliar numbers had called today. Not recognizing them, he had rejected the calls.

“I didn’t know you’d changed your number.”

Fu Baiqi frowned, offering no explanation. Instead, he approached and produced a small vial.

“What’s this?”

Fang Fengzhi’s heart lurched. His face drained of color, and he could not speak.

It was the medication Min Zhi had given him. At the villa, he had not dared take much. Whenever he felt unwell, even a tiny amount made his scalp tingle and nearly brought him to orgasm. So when the mark disappeared, some still remained.

For some reason, he had brought it home.

And… only a few days ago, he had been unable to resist tasting a little more.

He looked at Fu Baiqi’s expressionless face. But he had kept it in his own bedroom. How had Fu Baiqi found it?

Seeing how pale Fang Fengzhi had become, Fu Baiqi glanced down at his gland. It was unmarked.

When he first came home, he had smelled faint pheromones that were not his own. Aggressive ones, certainly not an Omega’s. He had been convinced Fang Fengzhi had found someone else. For an instant, anger at being betrayed had surged within him. Following the scent, however, he had found only this.

For some reason, he had felt relieved.

That involuntary, instinctive reaction infuriated him.

With a cold laugh, he tossed the vial into Fang Fengzhi’s hands. Shameless, as expected. Having failed to seduce him with pheromones before, he had apparently grown so desperate that he bought a concentrated extract from some black market. He had probably been relying on it throughout Fu Baiqi’s absence.

Ignoring Fang Fengzhi’s strange expression, he moved on.

“Mom was admitted to the hospital today.”

“Come with me to see her.”

Still dazed, Fang Fengzhi caught only the key word.

“She’s sick?”

After a long moment, looking at Fu Baiqi’s impassive face, the weight in his chest finally dropped. Fu Baiqi did not suspect him.

Then he thought again about what the man had said.

Sick? She had seemed perfectly healthy a few days ago. How had she suddenly ended up in the hospital? Though puzzled, he asked nothing.

“Are we going now?”

Fu Baiqi nodded but did not move. His cold eyes turned toward Fang Fengzhi, frighteningly dark.

Fang Fengzhi’s heart rose into his throat again.

“What is it…?”

“The whole room smells like you.”

“Sorry. I’ll put on a blocking patch…”

“No need.”

Fu Baiqi abruptly got up and entered the study. Then there was silence.

Confused, Fang Fengzhi approached the doorway just as Fu Baiqi threw a used suppressant syringe into the bin. Perhaps his body had not adjusted to the medication yet. His gaze was slightly unfocused.

“I almost couldn’t hold back just now.”

He held his head and waited a while.

Once his body had adjusted and the medication had taken effect, he straightened and walked toward Fang Fengzhi.

His face was as expressionless as ever, but Fang Fengzhi felt an inexplicable fear. Something about Fu Baiqi seemed wrong. His heart pounded, as though every approaching step were crushing it.

He retreated unconsciously. When the Alpha was only a step away, he could bear it no longer.

“I… I need to get something.”

He hurriedly turned away.

Before he had taken more than a few steps, someone seized his hair from behind.

“Ah!”

His vision swayed, and his body was slammed against the wall. Before Fang Fengzhi could understand what was happening, Fu Baiqi’s woody scent rushed into his nose, making him weak.

The Alpha leaned close to his ear.

“Isn’t it pheromones you want? I’ll give them to you.”

Before he could recover, Fu Baiqi bit into his gland. Sharp teeth pierced his flesh, invading that sensitive place.

Fang Fengzhi shook violently. Having experienced the strongest pheromone concentration of an Enigma, he did not find Fu Baiqi’s scent nearly as overwhelming. But their compatibility was still one hundred percent, and the stimulation briefly robbed him of speech. He gasped with his mouth open. After marking him, the Alpha behind him lingered, licking that patch of skin. Fang Fengzhi immediately grew hard. His hole tingled as though smeared with anesthetic, aching for someone to push inside.

Unable to bear it, he caught the hand at his waist. But the man behind him flung him off as though shocked.

Fu Baiqi frowned, breathing hard.

For the first time, he understood how terrifying perfect pheromone compatibility could be. He had injected a suppressant only minutes earlier, yet all he could think about was having sex with Fang Fengzhi. He even wanted to mark him permanently.

Clenching his teeth, he stared at Fang Fengzhi’s aroused face, his heart pounding. He was about to get another suppressant when Fang Fengzhi suddenly threw himself at him.

Fang Fengzhi was no longer entirely lucid. Newly marked, he urgently needed his marker’s pheromones to soothe him. So, as he had before, he sought the arms of their source. In his present state of mind, doing that would get him the pheromones he needed.

Instead, he was shoved away. Caught off guard, he stumbled backward and fell, striking his head hard.

Some clarity returned. Dazedly, he looked up and saw Fu Baiqi before him.

He blinked.

Only when fresh blood appeared on Fang Fengzhi’s forehead did Fu Baiqi realize what he had done. He hurried to fetch the first-aid kit and stop the bleeding, then gave him a suppressant injection. At last, Fang Fengzhi began to settle.

Exhausted, he leaned against the sofa and silently watched Fu Baiqi tidy up. He neither moved nor spoke.

When the Alpha had finished, he approached.

“Feeling better?”

“I’ll take you to the hospital.”

Fang Fengzhi nodded. He blamed Fu Baiqi neither for marking him without warning nor for accidentally hurting him. He simply could not understand it.

But this time, he did not want to understand. As Fu Baiqi reached to help him up, he suddenly asked, “You want a divorce too, don’t you?”

He did not simply say he wanted a divorce. He asked whether Fu Baiqi wanted one too. That way, it would be their mutual decision rather than his alone.

But Fu Baiqi’s reaction was not what he expected. He frowned, then said, “We’ll discuss it later. Hospital first.”

He was actually hesitating.

Fang Fengzhi sat in the passenger seat. It was his first time riding in Fu Baiqi’s car.

Perhaps he was too tired. Once inside, he lowered his eyes toward the window and said nothing.

Fu Baiqi glanced at him several times. The person who always approached him so eagerly had suddenly fallen completely silent, and he was not used to it. As for the divorce, he had been waiting for Fang Fengzhi to bring it up. Yet now that he finally had, Fu Baiqi hesitated.

He did not know why. For the moment, he simply did not want to discuss it.

After having Fang Fengzhi’s wound dressed at the hospital, they stopped to see Fu Baiqi’s mother.

The Omega lay in bed with her husband attending to her. Her complexion looked considerably healthier than Fang Fengzhi’s.

As the two entered, she could smell their mingled pheromones from a distance. She immediately smiled as though something wonderful had happened and winked at Fang Fengzhi.

He paused, then lowered his head without speaking.

Outside the hospital, Fang Fengzhi glanced at Fu Baiqi.

“Did you mark me because of your mother?”

Rather than answering, Fu Baiqi said, “I’ll take you home first.”

He knew his mother was pretending to be ill. It was merely a ploy to make him mark Fang Fengzhi permanently. Fang Fengzhi was not wrong. Part of the reason he had given him a temporary mark was to stop her nagging. Another part…

That vial of pheromone extract had been the spark.

Lately, Min Zhi kept finding himself paying attention to the pheromones on Fu Baiqi, that faint trace of chamomile.

Unable to explain or control the habit, he attributed it entirely to how much he liked the scent.

But it remained elusive, barely there.

Min Zhi did not dwell on it. He had no other thoughts.

Until this morning, when Fu Baiqi brought documents for him to sign.

Before the door even opened, his scent drifted inside. Min Zhi’s gaze darkened as he watched the Alpha approach. His favorite chamomile pheromones had mingled with Fu Baiqi’s own woody scent, so potent and intense that they were impossible to ignore.
