Chapter 20: The Parched Land

Min Zhi did not understand why the meeting room felt so stifling today.

Turning to the assistant beside him, he said, “Lower the air conditioning.”

“Mr. Min, it’s already sixteen degrees…”

Min Zhi paused and noticed that several of the less robust attendees had put on their jackets. He said nothing more and took an expressionless sip of tea. But even its rich fragrance could not dispel the scent on Fu Baiqi. Instead, it seemed to grow stronger. The warm chamomile could barely escape, pitifully imprisoned by Fu Baiqi’s own woody scent.

The mixed pheromones in the meeting room smelled awful. Min Zhi was so irritated he could hardly remain.

He looked up at the employee speaking.

Someone from publicity. This was supposed to be a senior management meeting, yet they had sent an inexperienced newcomer to join in. The room already smelled bad enough.

One round of presentations was apparently not enough. The employee took out a second proposal.

Min Zhi skimmed it, then snapped it shut before the man could speak. He abruptly stood.

“Excuse me. The smell is giving me a headache. We’ll continue tomorrow.”

Everyone froze. Min Zhi was normally stern, his meticulous approach bordering on inflexibility. This was the first time he had rescheduled a meeting halfway through. More importantly, he rarely displayed his emotions so openly. His expression was terrible, and no one understood what smell he meant. Afraid their own pheromones were too strong, they lowered their heads and kept silent.

Min Zhi took several pills but still felt agitated. He spent the entire afternoon in his office.

At the end of the day, he happened to meet Fu Baiqi in the elevator.

“Mr. Min.”

“How are you feeling now?”

Fu Baiqi’s scent remained strong. Min Zhi turned his head aside.

“Much better.”

Noticing the floor Fu Baiqi selected, he asked, “You didn’t drive today?”

Fu Baiqi checked his watch and nodded.

“I’ve moved somewhere near the company. I haven’t been driving lately.”

“I see.”

Min Zhi walked out of the elevator alone. The gray-white garage lighting made his expression look strangely off. As usual, he got behind the wheel and started the engine, with no unusual thoughts in mind.

But after leaving the garage, he did not drive toward home.

He went straight to his brother’s apartment building.

Standing beside a flower bed, he reflected that his brother had left on a research trip and was not home. Coming here was meaningless.

Yet he went upstairs anyway.

At last, he stopped outside the apartment next to his brother’s.

He did not need the door to open. Through its gaps, he could already detect faint chamomile.

There was no need to guess what that concentrated scent meant. The Omega inside was in heat.

Min Zhi did not ring immediately. Moving aside, he took a bottle of pheromone suppressant pills from his bag. Ignoring the dosage, he poured some into his hand and swallowed them. The medication suppressed the agitation in his body. He breathed deeply and waited a while before approaching the door.

He rang the bell while taking out his phone to call Fang Fengzhi.

As expected, no one answered the door.

Only on the fifth call did someone finally pick up. For a long time, there was no voice, only heavy breathing.

Min Zhi spoke first.

“Fang Fengzhi.”

“Open the door for me.”

There was no reply. But Min Zhi did not hang up. He patiently listened to the sounds on the other end. Much later, there was a rustling. Perhaps Fang Fengzhi had knocked against something; a dull thud reached his ear.

Min Zhi pressed his lips together.

Then the pheromones grew stronger. A moment later, the door opened a crack. Chamomile mixed with an aggressive woody scent poured out, washing over him. Clenching his teeth, Min Zhi looked through the opening. The Omega hid behind the door. Only his pale fingers gripping its edge were visible.

Min Zhi stepped forward, wedged his foot into the gap, and pushed the door open with little effort.

Even that slight force made the Omega lose his balance. He stumbled backward and caught himself against a cabinet.

Min Zhi stepped inside. When he finally saw the Omega clearly, his already uneasy heart sank.

Downstairs, he had not understood why he had come. Outside the door, he had told himself he would leave after making sure the Omega was all right.

But now, standing before Fang Fengzhi, he saw a body that had grown noticeably thinner in less than half a month. Gauze covered an injury on his forehead. His once fair, lovely face looked withered and forlorn from the lack of his marker’s pheromones. Even the mole on his eyelid seemed dull, as though its color had faded. He stared at Min Zhi with lifeless eyes, then slowly blinked.

Like a damaged, rusting machine.

Min Zhi stepped forward and caught the Omega’s arm. As expected, it was covered in needle marks. One was still bleeding. He had been using suppressants throughout this heat.

Heat rose in Min Zhi’s throat and rushed into his nose, making even his exhalations burn. For some reason, an indescribable anger took hold of him. When Fang Fengzhi frowned and shrank away at his approach, that anger peaked.

Without moderating his strength, he pulled the Omega toward him and saw the bite marks that had left an open wound on his gland.

Expressionless, Min Zhi said nothing. He kicked the door shut, put an arm around Fang Fengzhi’s shoulders, and brazenly entered their home.

Fang Fengzhi was practically dragged along. In heat, his legs were limp, his body utterly without strength. He could only let someone else do as they pleased. His mind was so muddled he did not even know who was beside him. The man’s pheromones were familiar, but he did not like them. More precisely, a marked Omega would not like anyone’s pheromones except their marker’s. They craved and adored only the person who had marked them.

The pheromones beside him were so strong they made him uncomfortable. Fang Fengzhi held his breath. Breathing in too much more might make him sick.

In his current condition, taking Fang Fengzhi to the hospital was impossible. The bleeding puncture on his arm was probably from an injection just before he opened the door. Judging by his state, the suppressant had only cleared his head slightly. It had done nothing to suppress his pheromones.

His pheromones were completely disordered. His body, their vessel, had accumulated too much and could not withstand more of his Alpha marker’s stronger pheromones. Yet his partner seemed unconcerned, neither soothing him with pheromones nor helping him release them.

No amount of suppressants would work.

Frowning, Min Zhi threw him onto the bed.

The chamomile was pushing him close to his own limit.

“Where are the suppressants?”

But the Omega was entirely incoherent now. His eyes full of desire, he sat dazedly, panting, with no understanding of the question.

Min Zhi’s throat bobbed. Gritting his teeth, he endured it. For the first time, he abandoned his composure and rummaged through someone else’s room. Finding what he needed in a drawer, he performed a quick cleaning and injected the liquid into his vein without hesitation.

His body grew cold. The suppressant calmed his boiling blood, and his sense of smell began to shut down. The rich chamomile in the air now seemed to come from somewhere far away.

A minute later, he was completely calm.

He approached Fang Fengzhi. The Omega had collapsed onto the bed, trembling all over.

His heat had not stopped.

Min Zhi sat on the bed and asked, “What do you want to do now?”

The Omega could neither hear nor answer.

Min Zhi helped him upright, sitting him at an angle to face him, and patted his cheek with measured force.

“Fang Fengzhi, try to focus.”

Fang Fengzhi blinked. His unfocused eyes could barely distinguish the outline of the person before him, let alone his face.

“Fang Fengzhi, listen to me.”

“Your body can’t take any more suppressants.”

“You have to endure the heat.”

The words reached his ears. It took him several minutes to understand them.

Then he slowly nodded.

He understood. The problem was that he could not bear it. As soon as Min Zhi let go, his limbs began shaking uncontrollably. Whimpering, he rolled across the bed as though boneless. Min Zhi watched with a frown, remaining still until he crawled to the edge and reached out to open a drawer.

Inside were suppressants.

Min Zhi seized his slender ankle and pulled him back.

He had become dependent on them.

Grinding his teeth, Min Zhi said sternly, “Another injection will ruin your gland.”

The poor Omega’s face was already soaked in tears. His body alternated between hot and cold, and the discomfort below was unbearable. The pheromones of the man beside him were impossibly strong. Fang Fengzhi felt as though he were suffocating. He wanted to crawl to the edge of the bed, but his ankle was gripped so tightly that even the bone hurt. His tears flowed harder, and he kicked desperately.

“Let go… let me go…”

Irritated by the kicking, Min Zhi pulled Fang Fengzhi to his side and forcibly gathered him into his arms. He tugged off his tie, wound it several times around the Omega’s hands, and bound them tightly to the headboard.

Now Fang Fengzhi could not move at all.

His tears would not stop. He cried and pleaded.

“Don’t do this… it hurts so much…”

His pitiful face was drenched, his eyes fiercely red. Min Zhi looked once, then turned away.

He saw the Omega’s cock straining high against his trousers, the tip wet with leaking fluid. His slender legs shook violently.

Min Zhi only wanted to hold them still and stop the movement.

Fang Fengzhi’s pleas kept spilling out. Desire had burned through his mind, and Min Zhi did not want to heed him.

But after the Omega’s body convulsed violently for a while, Min Zhi heard him cry out in pain.

“It’s unbearable… Mr. Min… I can’t bear it…”
