Qin Du and Mu Yunting had both seen enough of the world to remain calm. As long as they couldn’t actually die, it was hardly a major problem.
“What now? It’s too late to run. You don’t want to go back out and face Master this soon either, do you?”
“Obviously! Hurry up and find somewhere to hide!”
The vegetation around them was dense, offering excellent hiding places everywhere.
Qin Du immediately leaped into a tree and used a cleansing spell to erase his scent.
Mu Yunting was a step too slow. Before he could climb up, he heard a jumble of approaching footsteps.
With no time to reach the branches, he slipped into a thick clump of bushes instead.
He had barely concealed himself when the situation outside changed.
“Run! The… the wolves are catching up!”
“I can’t, Senior Sister! I can’t run anymore. I really can’t!”
“Keep going! Hurry!”
From his high vantage point, Qin Du had a clear view. When he took a closer look, he spotted a familiar face.
Of the five female cultivators fleeing desperately from the wolf spirits, wasn’t the one in front, still pulling a companion along, Yin Shuangyue’s direct disciple, Yu’er?
She had shown them the way at the Xianyue Sect. Even then, he had thought there was something strange about the way Mu Yunting looked at her. What a coincidence.
They had actually run into her here!
Surely Mu Yunting was about to play the hero and rescue the beauty?
But in a situation like this, even Mu Yunting could not guarantee he would get out unscathed with his current strength.
The thought that Mu Yunting might act rashly and end his trial early brought a gleeful smile to Qin Du’s lips.
He would prove to Lin Huaiqing that he was a hundred times better than Mu Yunting!
“Senior Sister! Help… Aah!”
A piercing scream rang out from the depths of the dark forest. Then a red light flashed. A female cultivator, caught by the calf and set upon by the other wolves, was deemed dead and immediately teleported out of the realm.
The realm’s elimination system triggered well before actual death.
Essentially, anyone caught in a wolf spirit’s jaws who failed to break free quickly would be deemed dead.
With only four members of the team left, Yu’er immediately decided they could not keep running.
“What do we do, Senior Sister? We’re surrounded! Xue’er has already been teleported out!”
“No more running! We can’t outrun wolves. Sisters, form an array with me and face them!”
The Xianyue Sect stood out among the immortal sects for its mastery of arrays.
Though only four remained, the women swiftly took their positions and formed a magical array around themselves.
More than a dozen wolf spirits had already gathered outside it. The largest and most conspicuous among them was the Wolf Spirit King.
Several times larger than an ordinary wolf, it had a distinctive tuft of red fur on its forehead. It was a fourth-tier fire-element Wolf Spirit King.
Slaying a king-class creature awarded at least a hundred points. Whoever personally killed this Wolf Spirit King would almost certainly secure a place in the top five.
Added to the points Qin Du already had, that should be enough to guarantee second place and give him a shot at first.
Tempted though he was up in his tree, the sight of the dozens of wolves surrounding their king quickly cooled his enthusiasm.
Even if all of them fought together, taking on the pack would be dangerously reckless.
Besides, with so many people involved, who could secure the final blow? If he failed to claim it, wouldn’t he just be doing all that work for someone else’s benefit?
Demons like him had no reverence for the human virtue of taking pleasure in helping others.
Under the wolves’ attacks, cracks began to appear in the array’s barrier. However hard the women tried, the fractures kept widening.
Seizing its chance, the Wolf Spirit King spat an enormous fireball at a crack. Unable to withstand the searing heat, the barrier shattered.
The moment the barrier shattered, the women scattered in panic. The wolves descended on them nonetheless, tearing into them until almost all were deemed dead.
Only Yu’er, who had reached mid-Foundation Establishment, still had the strength to fight back.
Unfortunately, she did not yet possess a bonded spiritual weapon. With only a dagger for protection, she could barely hurt the wolves.
Gradually realizing that she could offer little resistance, the wolves stopped rushing to attack.
They surrounded her as though toying with their prey.
Some had clearly developed intelligence. They crept forward with vile intent and began tearing at Yu’er’s robes.
The Xianyue Sect’s disciple robes were made from gauze and other lightweight fabrics. They stood no chance against the wolves’ teeth and were soon ripped into pieces.
Yu’er screamed and hurried to hold her clothes together, but she could not stop them from being torn into strips.
Even Qin Du, hiding in the tree, could no longer bear to watch. What was wrong with these wolves? How had developing intelligence made them so depraved?
He drew the cast-iron sword from his back, preparing to take them on. But before he could move, Mu Yunting burst out of the bushes.
Qin Du followed immediately, dropping from the tree and driving his sword through a wolf spirit’s spine.
Hot blood splashed over his face and body.
When he looked up, Mu Yunting had already charged into the pack. With an utterly ordinary cast-iron sword, he had beheaded three wolves.
Mu Yunting pulled Yu’er toward him and shielded her firmly behind his back.
The wolves that had been tormenting her were now dead beneath his blade.
Truthfully, Qin Du had never seen Mu Yunting so focused.
He had to admit that Mu Yunting’s current cultivation was undoubtedly above his own. Or perhaps this woman had stirred his fighting spirit.
Badly frightened, Yu’er clung to Mu Yunting’s arm with one hand while holding her tattered clothes together with the other.
After several exchanges, the wolves had suffered enough to stop attacking recklessly.
Instead, they surrounded the three while keeping a cautious distance.
The Wolf Spirit King had yet to attack either, perhaps wary of the two cast-iron swords now stained with so much of its pack’s blood.
But that did not mean the three had the upper hand. The most dangerous thing about wolves was their coordinated attacks. They were still on the defensive.
Qin Du scratched between his brows and frowned.
“That was reckless! What now? We’re surrounded.”
“I never asked you to come out. You chose to play the hero yourself. Worst case, we fight our way out—or get teleported out together.”
“Absolutely not! Getting eliminated alongside you? I’d never live down the shame!”
Qin Du’s reply was thoroughly arrogant.
Even Yu’er, still shaken beside them, was bewildered.
Weren’t these two fellow disciples? How could they still be arguing at a time like this?
Hoping to stop their bickering, she spoke tentatively.
“We learned in our beast studies class that wolf spirits are afraid of fire. Why don’t the three of us use fireball spells to set the surrounding trees alight and scare them away?”
Both men turned to stare at her in disbelief.
What none of them knew was that the scene of their encirclement was already being broadcast on the giant screen outside.
Not only Qin Du and Mu Yunting, but everyone watching outside had heard her suggestion perfectly.
Lin Huaiqing’s hand shook, spilling tea all over the table.
This girl certainly had an unconventional way of thinking!
Quite apart from the fact that setting a forest on fire could land you in prison for life, this realm was a precious piece of the Xianyue Sect’s intangible cultural heritage!
What if they set it alight, lost control of the flames, and burned the entire realm down?
