Could she be one of those legendary beauties in the male lead’s harem—all curves and no brains?
Seated in a place of honor and chatting with someone beside her, Yin Shuangyue heard the suggestion and her expression darkened.
This disciple of hers had good aptitude. Unfortunately, her brains left something to be desired. This was thoroughly embarrassing.
Meanwhile, inside the realm, Mu Yunting said, “That won’t work. What if we lose control of the fire and burn the whole realm down?”
Qin Du added, “Fellow Daoist, losing the trial is one thing. But if we destroy the realm and your master holds us responsible, none of us will get away with it.”
For once, the two were in complete agreement.
“Besides, that Wolf Spirit King is a fourth-tier fire-element beast. Fire might not frighten it at all. We need another plan.”
In the end, the three decided to fight their way out through sheer skill.
Yu’er would use an assortment of flashy spells to attack and draw the Wolf King’s attention, while Qin Du and Mu Yunting cleared out the other wolves as quickly as possible.
To their surprise, the plan worked. Before long, the two men had carved an escape route through the pack.
Mu Yunting quickly pulled Yu’er toward him and shouted to Qin Du nearby, “Let’s go!”
But Qin Du showed no intention of retreating. Instead, he seemed determined to keep fighting.
“You two go ahead! I’m killing this Wolf King!”
“You, alone?”
Mu Yunting clearly did not believe Qin Du could bring it down by himself.
Yet even after escaping the wolves’ encirclement, he and Yu’er lingered.
“What about him? Are we just leaving him in there with the wolves?”
After facing death alongside them, Yu’er did not want to abandon anyone.
Mu Yunting fell silent in thought.
He and Qin Du had been enemies for an entire lifetime. But even now, he could not bring himself to abandon him and leave with Yu’er.
Qin Du could easily have stayed hidden in the tree earlier. Instead, he had stepped in when Yu’er was attacked.
And their master had specifically told them to help each other inside the realm.
“Damn it!”
As though reaching a momentous decision, Mu Yunting said, “Wait here. I’m going back for him!”
Knowing better than to cause trouble at a time like this, Yu’er obediently stayed where she was and nodded.
When Mu Yunting returned, he found Qin Du under attack from the Wolf King and the last two surviving wolf spirits.
He had injuries of varying severity all over his body. Wolf corpses and beast cores littered the ground around him.
The fellow did have some ability after all. In such a short time, he had reduced the pack to just three.
“Why did you come back? Didn’t I tell you to leave?”
Seeing Mu Yunting return, Qin Du assumed he had come to steal his points.
Mu Yunting pressed his lips together, then answered evenly, “To help you…”
“I don’t need it!”
Qin Du had barely finished his stubborn retort when a wolf clamped its jaws around his ankle.
Fortunately, Mu Yunting struck in time, severing its head with a single slash.
Neither said anything more. Both focused entirely on the Wolf Spirit King.
They had fought to the death in their previous life. Who could have imagined they would work so seamlessly together in this one?
Like old friends who knew each other’s every move, they joined forces to bring the Wolf Spirit King down.
Qin Du delivered the final thrust, driving his sword straight through its heart.
His score instantly soared to 300, propelling him into first place.
Before their eyes, the Wolf Spirit King dissolved into a wisp of blue smoke. Only a core the size of a cherry and an exquisite glass vial remained on the ground.
Puzzled, Qin Du picked up the vial and examined it in the faint moonlight.
He knew what the core was. Consuming one was highly beneficial to cultivators.
Then what was this vial?
Yu’er came running over from a distance. Looking at the battlefield, which had yet to be cleared, she saw that the Wolf Spirit King was gone. Both men had sustained injuries, but neither seemed seriously hurt. Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief.
“Where’s the Wolf Spirit King? You really killed it? That’s incredible!”
Mu Yunting plucked a leaf from some nearby plant and used it to wipe the blood from his sword.
Qin Du held up the vial.
“Yu’er, do you know what this is?”
“A treasure map?! Where did you get it?”
As a disciple of the Xianyue Sect, Yu’er naturally knew such things existed.
“It dropped after we killed the Wolf Spirit King.”
At the mention of a treasure map, Mu Yunting’s eyes lit up.
He had found his spirit sword at a treasure site.
Qin Du quietly glanced at Mu Yunting, who was sitting nearby, making a show of polishing his cast-iron sword. He cleared his throat, then tossed the vial to him.
“You can have this! We killed it together, after all. Don’t go telling people I took advantage of you!”
Since he had received the points for killing the Wolf Spirit King, Mu Yunting might as well have the reward it dropped.
He wasn’t someone who liked taking advantage of others—especially Mu Yunting.
Mu Yunting froze for a moment, clearly not expecting Qin Du to give him the vial.
“You’re really giving it to me?”
“You ask too many questions.”
They had worked seamlessly together while fighting, yet somehow became awkward at a moment like this.
Yu’er stifled a laugh, then graciously bowed to them both.
“Thank you, fellow Daoists, for saving me!”
“You’re too kind, Miss Yu’er,” Mu Yunting replied.
“Are you still looking for teammates? Could I join you?”
Yu’er asked cautiously.
Before Mu Yunting could answer, Qin Du jumped in.
“Of course! There are only two of us. We could use another person!”
He still wanted to discover what secret lay between Yu’er and Mu Yunting. He had worried he might not run into her, yet here she was.
Wasn’t this perfect?
During the crisis, Mu Yunting had clearly been deeply concerned for her. Now, however, his attitude had changed.
Mu Yunting neither agreed nor objected to her joining them.
“Let’s follow the map and find the treasure first…”
With that, he headed deeper into the realm on his own.
Yu’er couldn’t understand the change in his behavior either. She could only follow quietly behind Qin Du.
These two male cultivators were very strange.
She settled for talking to Qin Du, who at least seemed reasonably friendly toward her.
“Fellow Daoist Qin, you’re both so skilled. You must have earned plenty of points along the way!”
“Killing that Wolf Spirit King should have earned quite a few. This is my first trial, so I don’t know whether I’ll make the rankings where Master can see me.”
“Of course you will! Immortal Venerable Huaiqing truly lives up to the saying that great masters produce outstanding disciples!”
The two chatted and laughed as they walked behind him, while Mu Yunting’s expression grew darker and darker.
Suddenly, his steps faltered, and he collapsed straight onto the ground.
Fortunately, the earth was soft and covered in plants, cushioning his fall.
Qin Du and Yu’er hurried forward to check on him.
“Fellow Daoist Mu! What’s wrong?”
Yu’er shook him, but Mu Yunting did not respond at all.
Beside her, Qin Du channeled spiritual energy to light their surroundings. Only then did he see how terrible Mu Yunting looked.
“Could he have been poisoned?”
Yu’er had some talent for healing and hurriedly examined Mu Yunting’s exposed skin.
Only when she discovered a barely noticeable cut on one of his right fingers did she pause.
