Chapter 17: An Unexpected First Step in Cultivation

Worried that Qin Yu would simply give up, the system tried feeding him a little motivational encouragement.

【This is a world where strength reigns supreme. If you want to fight back, you need sufficient power. Think about it: once you’re strong enough, won’t you be able to make him do whatever you want?】

“Right. I need to cultivate hard. Sooner or later, I’ll grind him into the dirt.”

Qin Yu clenched his fists, brimming with fighting spirit. “I’ll make him cook for me, bring me water to wash my feet, and collect ten thousand bottles of that hundred-flower dew!”

【Exactly! That’s the spirit. Let’s cultivate.】

Filled with lofty ambitions, Qin Yu opened the Four Beasts Compendium and studied it carefully.

To cultivate, one must first draw spiritual energy into the body.

This meant sitting quietly in meditation to sense the spiritual energy around oneself, then guiding it into the dantian. Only once spiritual energy had entered the dantian could a cultivator begin practicing.

He sat cross-legged, closed his eyes, and concentrated.

Time slipped away in cultivation. Before he knew it, an entire night had passed.

Dejected, he flopped onto the floor and stared blankly at his hands. “I clearly saw it. Why couldn’t I grasp it?”

【Friendly reminder: It’s almost the Hour of the Rabbit.】

Qin Yu remembered the scroll that psychopath Yu Lancheng had given him. It required him to pay his morning respects during the Hour of the Rabbit. He sprang to his feet. “Shit!”

He arrived at the main hall’s entrance on time. “Master, this disciple has come to pay his respects. Are you awake?”

“Come in.”

As the words fell, the door opened by itself.

He entered and respectfully performed a disciple’s bow toward Yu Lancheng from the other side of the folding screen. “This disciple greets Master.”

“Come help me dress.”

“Yes.”

Qin Yu stepped behind the screen and found Yu Lancheng standing there casually. His robes hung loose at the chest, revealing healthy, wheat-colored skin beneath, with a tantalizing glimpse of defined abdominal muscles.

He secretly counted. An eight-pack!

Tears of envy trickled from the corner of his mouth. Having an eight-pack was the stuff of his dreams.

“Satisfied with what you see?”

To Qin Yu, that sinister drawl sounded as terrifying as a vengeful ghost demanding his life. His entire body stiffened in fright, and he immediately lost his nerve. “I was wrong, Master.”

He quickly helped Yu Lancheng dress, then stepped aside with his head meekly lowered.

Yu Lancheng’s cold, phoenix-shaped eyes narrowed slightly. His sash had not been smoothed out, and his outer robe was a complete mess. Qin Yu actually dared leave him dressed like this?

He looked Qin Yu up and down. On discovering that Qin Yu’s own clothes were just as disheveled, he suddenly felt as though he had brought this trouble upon himself.

“That will do. You may leave.”

The moment Qin Yu stepped out of the main hall, every trace of deference vanished from his face. If he had not feared Yu Lancheng seeing him, he would have flipped him off.

In the little kitchen, he surveyed the ingredients. He begrudged that damned psychopath every last one of them.

“System, get out here.”

【What do you need, Host?】

“Do you have any medicinal porridge that gives people diarrhea? The kind they won’t be able to detect.”

【Yes! Five hundred points per bowl.】

“Give me a bowl for free. Consider it compensation for deliberately keeping things from me.”

【…Fine.】

A steaming bowl of medicinal porridge appeared on the table.

To make it convincing, he deliberately waited in the kitchen until half an hour into the Hour of the Dragon before carrying it to the main hall.

“This disciple specially simmered this medicinal porridge for three whole hours. Please try it, Master.”

Just imagining Yu Lancheng frantically running to the toilet dispelled more than half his pent-up resentment.

But he had underestimated Yu Lancheng’s cunning.

Medicinal porridge simmered for three hours?

Would Qin Yu really be so thoughtful?

Anything this unusual was bound to be suspicious.

Yu Lancheng merely glanced at the bowl. “I don’t care for medicinal food. Drink it all yourself.”

Qin Yu’s smile froze. Could this man tell there was something wrong with it? He forced himself to explain. “This disciple prepared it especially for Master. How could I possibly drink it?”

His reaction only confirmed Yu Lancheng’s suspicions. “If I tell you to drink it, drink it. Don’t leave a single drop.”

Certain that Yu Lancheng knew the porridge had been tampered with, Qin Yu mentally cursed eighteen generations of the ancestors of that counterfeit-peddling system.

While he desperately searched for an excuse, a little black shadow suddenly emerged and pounced on the bowl. “Wow, that smells delicious! I want some.”

With that, it plunged headfirst into the bowl and began gulping…

The palm-sized figure somehow finished the entire bowl of medicinal porridge, even though the bowl was bigger than it was.

Qin Yu had no time to stop it. Even Yu Lancheng had not expected Little Black to appear out of nowhere and gulp down every last drop.

“Master, this disciple must go to the back mountain to collect hundred-flower dew.”

With that, he bolted toward the back mountain like the wind.

Yu Lancheng did not pursue him. Instead, he looked at Little Black with undisguised disdain. “When you’re outside, don’t tell anyone you’re my sword spirit. How embarrassing.”

“Master, wh—pfft… pfft…”

Stung by its master’s sudden disdain, Little Black was about to defend itself when its bowels abruptly betrayed it.

A moment later, it was hurled into the privy behind the hall…

“Qin Yu, you and I… pfft… are… sworn enemies!”

Little Black’s anguished cries rang throughout Yazheng Peak.

Inside the hall, Yu Lancheng recalled that fleeing figure and gave a sinister smile.

He had assumed the little liar would pretend to know nothing, wait for him to lower his guard, then find a chance to escape. Instead, Qin Yu had actually dared to drug him.

Things were growing more interesting by the moment.

With a slight sweep of his sleeve, a vast illusory screen appeared before him, displaying Qin Yu’s every movement on the back mountain.

Qin Yu was busy among the flowers and trees, a bottle in hand.

Hundred-flower dew was morning dew touched by the first rays of dawn, absorbing the sun’s essence. Whether consumed, used to refine pills, or employed in drawing talismans, it was an excellent ingredient.

Having collected half a bottle, Qin Yu was about to return and hand it over. The moment he turned, however, a solid kick struck him squarely in the face, sending him tumbling to the ground before he could react.

“Fuck, that hurts!”

Little Black glared at him with reddened eyes. “How dare you drug my master! Today I’ll beat you until your own parents wouldn’t recognize you!”

With that, its tiny body transformed into a three-foot sword of intertwined red and black, which proceeded to give Qin Yu a thorough thrashing.

Qin Yu covered his head and scrambled to dodge.

“You’re the one who wanted to drink it! That had nothing to do with me!”

“You don’t fight fair!”

“If you’ve got the guts, wait until I learn to cultivate, then fight me one-on-one!”

“Big Brother, I was wrong! Please go easy on me!”

Half an incense stick later.

Little Black returned to its tiny humanoid form and looked down at Qin Yu’s bruised, swollen face. Its voice was arrogant and icy. “I never leave survivors. You should be grateful you’re my master’s disciple.”

Qin Yu lay half-dead on the ground. He shuddered at the undisguised killing intent in its words. “Thank you for showing mercy, Big Brother.”

Suddenly, the pain throughout his limbs and bones vanished, replaced by a pleasant warmth.

【Aaaah! Host, how can you possibly be this lucky?! Even getting beaten up lets you draw spiritual energy into your body!】
