“Big Brother, I’ll take this hundred-flower dew to Master first. We can talk another time.”
Qin Yu sprang up excitedly and ran off, showing none of the near-dead exhaustion that had left him sprawled on the ground a second earlier.
At the main hall, he handed the dew to Yu Lancheng, then escaped to his own side hall under the pretext of preparing lunch.
He hurriedly sat down to examine his dantian. Around what had previously been barren space, he discovered two layers of dark purple spiritual energy swirling, accompanied by the faint crackle of electricity.
“The second level of Qi Refining already?!”
One beating had taken him straight to the second level? Would a few more let him break through directly to Foundation Establishment?
To test his theory, he sought out Little Black the next day for a duel, claiming he wanted revenge. As expected, he received another thorough thrashing, but the spiritual energy within him grew noticeably denser.
With that result, he immediately revised his cultivation strategy.
During the day, he completed everything Yu Lancheng demanded as quickly as possible, then spent his spare time challenging Little Black. At night, he set aside a third of his time to practice and study the Sea-Surpassing Sword Art.
Two months later.
On the back mountain of Yazheng Peak, a purple-clad figure practiced swordsmanship among the trees.
His techniques flowed into one another, working in harmony with his sword’s momentum. Seemingly simple moves concealed a continuous current of force, while his strikes grew faster still. Suddenly, the surrounding air seemed to congeal. He was attempting to gather the might of mountains and rivers into a single strike. Just as the sword’s momentum was about to take shape, the silvery blade began to tremble and hum.
Clang—
Qin Yu lost his grip, and the Four Beasts Token flew from his hand.
Clutching the aching web between his thumb and forefinger, he sat down miserably. “Once the sword’s momentum takes shape, it can cleave through all things. I’m not practicing it wrong. Why does the power run wild every time I gather it?”
He had fully mastered the first level of the Sea-Surpassing Sword Art a month ago, but he still could not find his way into the second.
Just then, Little Black came looking for him, brimming with excitement. “Qin Yu! Qin Yu! Let’s fight!”
“Tomorrow. I need to take today’s hundred-flower dew to Master.”
Qin Yu picked up the bottle beside him and turned to head down the mountain.
Little Black flew after him, trying to coax him back for a match. “Come on! There’s still time to go down after we fight.”
Qin Yu silently rolled his eyes. A match? That was a one-sided beating!
Fighting you doesn’t improve my cultivation anymore. Why would I go looking for pain just for the hell of it?
“I have other things to do today. Big Brother, let’s make it another day.”
“Aw, come on! Just one fight!”
No matter how Little Black pleaded, Qin Yu refused to fight again. He even quickened his pace down the mountain.
He entered the main hall and set the hundred-flower dew on the table. “Master, I’ve left the dew on the table.”
Just then, a voice sounded behind him. “He even goes out specifically to collect hundred-flower dew for you? What a fine disciple you have. Unlike those ungrateful disciples of mine, who think of nothing but cultivation all day. Such things would never occur to them.”
That wasn’t Yu Lancheng’s voice!
He cautiously looked back and saw an unexpected visitor sitting opposite Yu Lancheng—Wei Zhenghai.
Yu Lancheng spoke. “Aren’t you going to greet the sect master?”
He hurried over and bowed. “Disciple Qin Yu greets the sect master.”
Wei Zhenghai appraised him, seeing through his cultivation at a glance. The sixth level of Qi Refining?
His talent wasn’t particularly impressive. Wei Zhenghai’s own disciple, Jiang Fu, had already reached the ninth level and would soon enter Foundation Establishment.
His opinion of Qin Yu dropped another notch. “No need for formalities. I’ve come to inform you that the sect has arranged a training expedition for the new disciples. Pack your belongings and depart with everyone tomorrow at the Hour of the Rabbit.”
“A training expedition?”
He did not remember this happening in the story and instinctively looked toward Yu Lancheng.
“The sect master must have his reasons for arranging it. Go with the others and gain some experience.” Yu Lancheng did not so much as glance at Qin Yu before returning to his tea.
“This disciple obeys.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the system’s voice sounded in his mind.
【Host, please travel to Qu’an Village and prevent the female lead, Liu Yunbai, from sacrificing herself for love. Success will earn you 4,000 points and one Nine-Revolution Primordial Spirit Pill. Failure will result in nine bolts of lightning punishment.】
Having delivered his instructions, Wei Zhenghai said he had other matters to attend to and left.
Only two people remained in the hall: one seated, drinking tea; the other standing beside him, so nervous he scarcely knew what to do with his hands and feet.
Qin Yu lasted less than half a quarter of an hour. “This disciple will take his leave to pack.”
“Go.”
The moment Qin Yu left the main hall, Yu Lancheng set down his teacup. As it touched the tabletop, it crumbled to dust, swept away completely by a passing breeze.
“Two whole months of peace, was it?”
For the past two months, he had spent every day finding new ways to toy with that little liar, leaving no room to think of anything else. Before he knew it, all that time had passed. Had Wei Zhenghai not come today and shattered this illusion of tranquility, he might almost have forgotten what sort of person he was.
Little Black had still been plotting how to coax Qin Yu into another fight when it suddenly sensed its master’s mood. It hurriedly wrapped its arms around its little wings and hid in a corner.
Whenever its master was displeased, someone was bound to suffer.
The next day, Qin Yu arrived at the training grounds promptly at the Hour of the Rabbit.
Quite a few people were already there, chatting in small groups.
It was the first time in two months he had seen so many people. For a moment, he felt as though he had lost touch with society.
A quarter of an hour into the Hour of the Rabbit.
He Shen stepped forward. “I’m He Shen, the leader of this mission. You have the time it takes to drink a cup of tea to choose your teammates. All subsequent activities will be carried out in small teams.”
The crowd immediately stirred.
Those who knew each other formed teams on their own, while strangers began discussing how to group up.
Seeing two people looking for a third teammate, Qin Yu hurried over. “Brothers, need a third? Count me in.”
The two froze briefly at the sight of him, then refused. “Sorry, we already have a third teammate. He just hasn’t arrived yet.”
“All right.”
Qin Yu turned away and continued looking. After making a full circuit, he finally found someone standing alone in a corner. “Brother, haven’t found any teammates yet? Want to team up with me?”
The young man seemed surprised that anyone would want to partner with him. He pointed at himself in disbelief. “You want to team up with me?”
Qin Yu said, “You don’t have any teammates, and neither do I.”
“Then…”
Just as the young man was about to agree, another voice interrupted. “Feng Xiu, would you like to team up with me?”
Qin Yu and the young man named Feng Xiu both looked over. Once Qin Yu saw who had come, he immediately averted his gaze in disgust.
The newcomers were none other than Jiang Fu and Liu Wanrou.
Feng Xiu apologized to Qin Yu, then trotted eagerly over to Liu Wanrou.
As though only just realizing she had stolen someone else’s teammate, Liu Wanrou hastened to explain. “I’m sorry, A-Yu. I didn’t know Feng Xiu was your teammate. Shall I give him back?”
Before Qin Yu could say anything, Feng Xiu protested beside her. “Sister Wanrou, I never agreed to team up with him!”
“It seems Feng Xiu doesn’t want to be your teammate, A-Yu. Please don’t force him, all right?”
This woman was doing it on purpose!
Qin Yu was about to teach that scheming bitch a lesson when someone approached from the side. “I’m Liu Yunbai. I don’t have any teammates yet. Would you mind teaming up with me?”
Qin Yu instinctively turned.
A woman in blue stood before him, her bearing ethereal.
She was Liu Yunbai, the female lead?
