Chapter 24: Trading for the Halo

After talking with his father, Fu Baihan went upstairs to check on his little brother. When he opened the door and didn’t see the kid in his own room, it felt a little strange.

The kid had been taking over his bed so much lately that now that he was suddenly behaving, it felt odd.

“Brother?” Su Nuo’s door was open. Seeing Fu Baihan standing in the doorway without coming in, he looked puzzled.

“What are you reading?” Fu Baihan pushed down the strange feelings inside him, walked over, and sat down beside him.

Su Nuo showed him the book. “The original novel the script’s based on. I’m going to an audition this weekend.”

Actually, he remembered every single one of Heng Yu’s lines perfectly. But now that he had a second chance, he wasn’t going to get so cocky just because he’d played the role before that he thought he didn’t need to study the source material again.

The script for He Yun was adapted from a novel of the same name. Long before the production was even planned, the book had already been hugely popular online, which meant the actors were bound to face more attention and nitpicking.

To play a character from the book well, looking the part wasn’t enough.

The main story was about a prince named He Yun who slowly turns dark, killing his father and brothers to take the throne. Heng Yu, who could be called his true confidant, was one of the few sources of warmth he had as a young man.

And it was precisely because Heng Yu was destroyed by court politics and died a tragic death on the battlefield that He Yun, who used to live by patience and restraint, finally began to show his ruthless side.

There was nothing wrong with a deep friendship, but when Su Nuo thought about how the “HeYu” pairing had blown up and taken over the couple rankings in his past life, he felt this storyline wasn’t so simple after all.

Wasn’t the female lead’s presence a little weak?

But then again, a male-lead power fantasy where the hero conquers everything didn’t really need romance.

So why did everyone pair up the young general who died early with the cold-hearted emperor?

Wasn’t this “unattainable first love” kind of the wrong gender?

Back when Su Nuo played the role, he never thought about it that way. But reading the original again now, it felt like there were hints everywhere.

The author never said what kind of feelings He Yun had for Heng Yu. But looking at all the ways He Yun treated Heng Yu differently, and how later, after taking the throne with the female lead’s help, he never made her empress, it was clear that whether or not the young general had other feelings, the emperor definitely wasn’t innocent.

Should he play up this hidden storyline? Su Nuo hesitated.

It wasn’t that he had any opinion about the plot. He just didn’t want to get shipped with Wei Sinian again.

All his popularity would end up being handed over to Su Yujin by Wei Sinian anyway. He’d take the hate, and Su Yujin would reap the rewards. Why should he do all that work for nothing?

“An audition?” Only when he heard that did Fu Baihan really feel that his kid was about to break into show business. His response: “How much investment does the production need?”

Su Nuo stared at him, speechless, and tried to talk him out of it. “Brother, this makes me look like I got in through connections.”

Fu Baihan raised an eyebrow. “And you didn’t?”

Su Nuo punched him. “No!”

Even if you already own an entertainment company thanks to the power of money, please have a little faith in your brother’s actual skills!

“The director will definitely pick me.” Su Nuo puffed out his chest proudly. “I’m not some pretty face who needs a sugar daddy to pay his way into the cast.”

Fu Baihan asked, “Then what do you need a sugar daddy for?”

Su Nuo grinned at him. “When the time comes, the sugar daddy can just buy out a few extra movie screenings~”

“My sweetie’s very first job,” Fu Baihan sighed. “And I’m not even allowed to buy the whole production.”

Su Nuo: “…Get out.”

He knew his brother was rich, but it was still infuriating.

Fu Baihan had work to do too. After soothing his little brother for a while, he closed the door for him.

Su Nuo put the book down, thought about Fu Baihan, and closed his eyes.

So this was what his life was supposed to look like, if Su Yujin hadn’t interfered…

In show business, he wouldn’t have to tiptoe around, or go to drinking parties and cater to directors and producers just to land a role.

He had the backing to be willful and the freedom to do what he wanted, because before he even set foot in that world, Fu Baihan had already built him a brand-new paradise.

The whole entertainment company would put him first. He was the little young master under Fu Baihan’s protection, and he’d never have to weather any storms.

Meanwhile, Su Yujin, the one on his mind, wasn’t having an easy time at all.

The system had malfunctioned. It had failed to kill Fu Baihan, which meant Su Yujin had no way to swap destinies with Su Nuo.

As the original child of destiny, Su Nuo was favored by the entire world. As long as Su Nuo wasn’t pushed into ruin and bad luck, no matter what tricks Su Yujin used, Su Nuo would always come out on top.

This wasn’t the outcome Su Yujin wanted. If Su Nuo was still the protagonist, then what was the point of him transmigrating into the book? To make Su Nuo’s happy life look even better?

According to the plan, he was supposed to slip up on purpose so the Su family would find out he wasn’t their biological child. But because of the system’s malfunction, Su Yujin didn’t dare go through with the plan anymore.

As long as he didn’t leave the Su family, at least he could still enjoy their wealth.

If the Su family found out that Su Nuo was their real son before Su Yujin managed to steal his destiny, he’d most likely be kicked out.

As a transmigrator, Su Yujin had chosen the path the system offered him from the start: to replace the original protagonist, Su Nuo. Having made that choice, there was no turning back.

Without Su Nuo’s destiny, the system didn’t have the energy to upgrade and couldn’t unlock its storage space or shop. He was just a transmigrator with no cheats at all, and nothing going for him except knowing the original plot.

But even his knowledge of the original plot wasn’t clear. The system had only told him that Su Nuo was the child of destiny in this little world, and that he’d have it all, love and career.

He wanted to become that person. To him, these people were just characters in a story. Even though he’d lived among them for a few years, he had no real feelings for them. He didn’t care at all what would happen to Su Nuo after he stole his destiny.

Su Yujin saw it all as a game to beat. What he didn’t know was that he had stopped being the one in control of the game a long time ago.

Prompted by the system, he learned that Su Nuo was about to audition, and was urged to snatch the opportunity away from him.

Su Yujin and the system weren’t getting along like they used to. He didn’t trust it anymore, but he had nothing else to rely on.

Could he really steal the role from Su Nuo?

The system’s electronic voice sounded almost seductive: “Would the host like to redeem an Acting Halo?”

Su Yujin: “Don’t I have zero points?”

To keep his place in the Su family, he’d spent every last bit of the points he’d earned from side quests on winning over the Su parents. He had nothing coming in anymore.

“The system offers the host a credit service.”

“Since when are you so generous?” Su Yujin asked suspiciously.

“The host’s mission progress is tied to the system’s upgrades. Naturally, the system will do everything possible to assist the host,” the system replied calmly.

Without thinking too much about it, Su Yujin dove right into the temptation. “Fine. Redeem it.”
