After redeeming the Acting Halo, Su Yujin didn’t feel any different. He couldn’t help doubting the system. “Is this halo of yours even legit?”
After all, the system had promised to make the Fu family disappear last time and failed. Its credibility in Su Yujin’s eyes had already taken a hit.
With the deal done, the system went back to its cold, mechanical voice. “Acting Halo issued. Please arrive at the audition on time to activate a ten-minute Best Actor experience.”
Su Yujin cursed. “Ten minutes? I traded my future luck for this, and you gave me a one-time-use halo?”
He didn’t have Su Nuo’s perfect destiny to begin with, and borrowing on credit from the system meant betting his future. He’d thought an Acting Halo was a must for getting into show business and would bring in more benefits. Only now did the system tell him it would last just ten minutes.
“The host’s luck value is low. Available redemptions are limited,” the system replied.
Su Yujin wanted to scream at it, but apart from the system, he had nothing else to rely on in this world. Even knowing he’d been scammed, he couldn’t afford to fall out with it.
Now Su Yujin resented Su Nuo even more. Why did Su Nuo get in his way at every turn?
He’s just a fictional character. Why should he get such a great destiny?
Su Nuo had no idea the system had quietly maxed out Su Yujin’s hatred for him. After reading the script, he had some fresh ideas for the audition and was looking forward to it even more.
That weekend, before the auditions began, Wei Sinian joined the director to help with casting. They still hadn’t found anyone to play Heng Yu, and the whole crew was stressed. Every day filming was delayed meant another day of costs, and the investors were getting impatient.
Wei Sinian expected the director to be in a bad mood after seeing so many failed candidates, but instead the man was all smiles. Wei Sinian unscrewed a bottle of water. “Got someone you like today?”
“Hahaha, guess whose résumé I found in my inbox?” the director said mysteriously.
Wei Sinian thought of the boy who still hadn’t messaged him and wasn’t very interested. Who could possibly be a better fit than him?
“Sinian, you’ll never guess. I actually got a résumé from the Fu family’s little young master! At the banquet that day I only saw him from a distance and didn’t dare talk to him. Who knew the kid was so polite in private? He sent his résumé properly, and even said he admires my work!” Director Wang laughed happily, which only made Wei Sinian feel worse.
Wei Sinian looked at the director’s beer belly and dangerously receding hairline, and for the first time since entering the industry, faced an aesthetic crisis.
Was he really less charming than the director?
The kid wouldn’t give him the time of day, but he was polite and warm to the director. Was he not famous enough? Not handsome enough?
Wei Sinian felt a lump of frustration in his chest, but didn’t let it show. He just agreed. “He’s a good fit.”
“Of course he’s a good fit! Just seeing that face, I felt like Heng Yu came to life!” The director got excited talking about the role. “And besides, if the little young master joins, President Fu will definitely look after our production!”
“…Mm.”
Thinking about how close the two brothers had looked at the banquet, and the rumors about Fu Baihan in the investment world, Wei Sinian had to agree with the director.
But he didn’t want to work with the boy because he was after the Fu family’s money and power. It was simply because, to him, the boy was Heng Yu.
There was a beauty, once seen, never forgotten.
The script’s description of He Yun’s first meeting with Heng Yu captured exactly how stunned Wei Sinian had been when he first saw the boy.
A face like that would become famous in this industry even with nothing else going for it. Not to mention the boy had money behind him, was protected, and had an air of purity untouched by the world.
Show business never lacked beautiful people, but beautiful people who could stay clean and untainted in show business were rare. Sooner or later, they wore out the audience’s first impression.
“The Su family’s young master also wants to audition for this role. What’s up with rich kids these days? Do they all want to dabble in show business for fun?” the director complained to Wei Sinian.
“Which Su family?” Wei Sinian asked.
“The Su family that exports electrical appliances. They sent the kid straight to me and asked me to ‘take care of him.’ Ridiculous. Didn’t even mention an audition. They wanted to stuff him right into the role of Heng Yu.” The director scoffed. “Compared to that, even though I haven’t met him yet, Su Nuo is really likable. Funny coincidence, they both have the surname Su. How can their behavior be so different?”
Wei Sinian asked, “You turned them down?”
The director thumped his chest. “Of course. I told the Su family we’re holding open auditions. Fair competition!”
His film wasn’t short on investors, and he didn’t think much of whatever the Su family had promised.
Besides, if he really had to bow down to money, the one to bow to was obviously President Fu.
The Su family’s trading company was like a tiny ant compared to the Fu Group, and they still had the nerve to try throwing their weight around.
Su Yujin had tried to find a shortcut and failed. He was already in a bad mood, and now he was even more resentful.
What was wrong with this director? He wouldn’t even accept investment delivered right to his door.
Su Yuchen comforted him. “It’s okay. If the audition doesn’t work out, we’ll find you another script.”
Su Yujin pouted. “This is the one I want.”
“They won’t budge. There’s nothing I can do.” Su Yuchen felt a little guilty. “Want me to drive you to the audition?”
Remembering that Su Nuo would be there too and afraid Su Yuchen would see him, Su Yujin quickly shook his head. “No need, Brother. I can go by myself.”
Su Nuo looked a bit like Mrs. Su. It would be bad if Su Yuchen noticed him. Su Yujin didn’t want the Su family to find out so soon, since he still didn’t have control over swapping destinies.
Su Yuchen kept feeling like his little brother had been acting strange lately, but he couldn’t put his finger on why. Ever since Su Yujin insisted on going into show business, their parents had been against it, but he refused to back down, and in the end the family gave in.
With all the chaos at home lately, Su Yuchen was a bit worn out. His little brother didn’t seem nearly as sweet and well-behaved as he’d thought.
Su Yujin went to the audition on his own. Su Nuo also came alone. Fu Baihan, in full worried-dad mode, wanted to come along and wait for him, but Su Nuo firmly refused.
I’m not a little kid going to an after-school class! Brother, aren’t you being way too anxious?
“Nuonuo, it’s okay if it doesn’t work out. Don’t stress, okay?” Fu Baihan reminded him before he left.
Su Nuo, who’d had to get up early on a weekend: “Okay.”
But in his brother’s eyes, he was still a little kid who couldn’t do anything on his own.
After getting his number, Su Nuo waited in the waiting area.
The auditions were assigned by drawing lots. Su Nuo went over the script again to refresh himself on the scenes.
“Hi, are you here to audition too?”
Su Yujin, wearing a light layer of foundation, walked up to Su Nuo with a smile.
Su Nuo’s muscles tensed for a split second. Su Yujin had some creepy tricks up his sleeve, and Su Nuo didn’t know if he was already about to make a move on him.
Su Nuo kept his guard from showing too much, so Su Yujin didn’t notice anything off. Su Yujin tried to move closer to talk to him, but the bodyguards nearby stepped in and kept him away.
