A shadow fell over him. Su Nuo put down his cup and looked up, and saw someone who had almost faded from his memory.
His fingers curled. It was the middle of a blazing summer, yet he felt like he had fallen into an ice cellar.
He thought he wouldn’t care, but now that they were face to face, Su Nuo realized he couldn’t be that cool about it after all.
He hated him. He hated him so much he had to clench his teeth to keep his face from twisting.
But that intense feeling only lasted a moment. Maybe it was just the part of him that still couldn’t let go, acting up.
Why was he still holding on to any hope for these people? Hadn’t he seen clearly enough before he died in his last life?
Those harsh words still echoed clearly in his ears.
“Su Nuo, how could you think about Yujin like that? He’s a victim too.”
“You’ve gone way too far. If Yujin hadn’t let it go, you’d be in jail right now, you know that?”
“Su Nuo, are you done yet? What did Yujin ever do to you that you’d hurt him like this?”
“Su Nuo, you’ve disappointed me so much. I wish I’d never met you.”
……
Being hurt by the Su family and Su Yujin was nothing. The deepest pain had all come from people he thought were his friends.
Su Nuo still couldn’t understand. He and Yu Ning had known each other for over ten years. Their friendship started back in kindergarten. How did it end up like that?
Was Su Yujin just that good at fooling people? But Xi Zhou never believed Su Nuo was that kind of evil person.
And yet Yu Ning stood on Su Yujin’s side and condemned him.
Yu Ning obviously liked Su Yujin. Su Nuo hadn’t understood it before, but now it all made sense.
A transmigrated protagonist with a system, how could he not have a few side characters hopelessly devoted to him?
Was it the power of the script, or Su Yujin’s own charm?
Thinking about all this, Su Nuo calmed down, a cold smile on his lips.
Why should he care about any of that?
In the end, those simps were left with nothing. Didn’t Su Yujin just use them up and then get engaged to Chu Boyan?
Su Nuo hadn’t even gotten to see them get what was coming to them.
Just picturing these arrogant men finding out the truth after Su Yujin had played them made Su Nuo want to laugh out loud.
Of course, maybe they actually enjoyed being cheated on. If they still kept slaving away for Su Yujin after finding out they’d been played, that was just plain pathetic, and its own kind of karma.
Yu Ning, still only eighteen, didn’t have the cold look he’d had in Su Nuo’s past life when he blamed and yelled at him. Instead, there was hidden excitement in his eyes, along with a careful nervousness.
“Nuonuo, did you change your number?” Yu Ning stood in front of him and asked.
Su Nuo pushed himself up off his knees and said lightly, “Nope.” He’d only blocked him. Why would he need to change his number?
He walked past, bumping Yu Ning’s shoulder. Yu Ning pressed his lips together and grabbed his wrist.
“Nuonuo…”
Su Nuo’s face was cold. He pulled free. “Get out of my way.”
“Did I do something to upset you?” Yu Ning looked into his eyes, clearly hurt.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.” Su Nuo smiled at him. “Let’s just not keep in touch anymore.”
“Su Nuo!” Yu Ning raised his voice, angry now.
“What’s going on?” Xi Zhou dropped the ball and ran over from the court, stepping between Yu Ning and Su Nuo. He didn’t know what had happened between them, but seeing them face off like that, he was worried Su Nuo would get hurt.
With those skinny arms and legs, who could he even beat in a fight?
When Yu Ning saw Xi Zhou, he looked even more unhappy, and annoyed too. He had never liked Xi Zhou. He and Su Nuo were supposed to be best friends, but Xi Zhou was always getting in the middle.
“Let’s go.” Su Nuo threw an arm around Xi Zhou’s shoulders and walked off with him.
“Nuonuo…” Yu Ning wanted to follow, but Su Nuo didn’t look back even once. He stood there staring, not knowing what he had done to make Su Nuo so angry. How bad must it have been for Su Nuo to cut him off this coldly?
After all, he was young and proud. After Su Nuo embarrassed him like that, Yu Ning didn’t go after him. Later, this became Yu Ning’s biggest regret.
Every time he tried to make things right and got shut out, Yu Ning couldn’t help wondering: if he had gone after Su Nuo back then and tried a little harder, would Su Nuo have softened toward him even a little?
In the middle of the night, Yu Ning woke up from a nightmare and grabbed his phone. His hand shook as he turned on the screen. When he saw the date on it, a flood of emotions hit him, and his heartbeat sounded loud and clear in the darkness.
Had he gone back to his teenage years? No… maybe it was a parallel world. The Fu family was still here, he hadn’t been fooled by Su Yujin yet, and Nuonuo was still okay.
Thinking back on all the ridiculous things he’d done, Yu Ning felt like he’d been under a spell. He had believed every single word Su Yujin said. Whenever Su Yujin cried, he assumed Su Nuo was bullying him.
Only later, when he slowly came to his senses, did he finally understand. Su Nuo had done nothing wrong, yet they had pushed him into suffering every kind of pain.
He wanted to apologize and make it up to him, but he had lost that chance forever.
Su Nuo was dead. He died the moment he chose to save Su Yuchen.
They had grown up together since they were babbling toddlers. Why had he done so many things to hurt Su Nuo? Wasn’t he supposed to be the one who knew Su Nuo best?
The Nuonuo he knew was so kind. So kind that even after a bunch of bastards like them had ruined his life, he still ran out to save someone.
After Su Nuo died, the first one to lose his mind wasn’t Su Yuchen. It was Yu Ning.
Night after night he couldn’t sleep, remembering the days before things broke between them. But no matter how much he missed him, every time he closed his eyes, Su Nuo never once came to him in a dream.
Yu Ning fell apart. In no time, he was skin and bones, completely worn out.
But Xi Zhou wouldn’t let him attend Su Nuo’s funeral. The whole Su family was turned away too.
His regret came too late. No one cared anymore, and nothing could undo it.
He couldn’t even see Su Nuo one last time. The more Yu Ning looked back, the more he realized how terribly he had treated Su Nuo.
It was his own insecurity. After the Fu family started sponsoring Su Nuo and brought him to live with them, even though the two of them were still close desk mates at school, Yu Ning felt like Su Nuo had grown distant.
But it wasn’t Su Nuo who had changed. It was him.
With his own guesses and imaginings, he pushed Su Nuo further and further away.
When he met Su Yujin in college, he thought he had fallen for him. But only at the very end did he understand: those feelings he could never put into words, that flutter and quiet longing, had started long ago, in all the days he spent looking at Su Nuo. He was just too stupid to tell the difference.
Su Yujin’s helplessness and trust reminded Yu Ning of how he used to protect Su Nuo when they were little. He treated Su Yujin as the one he loved, and the cruel joke was that he ended up helping cause the death of the person he truly loved.
Now that time had turned back, did he have a chance to change the future?
It was still the summer after senior year of high school. Su Yujin hadn’t come into their lives yet. This time, no matter what, he would stand firmly by Su Nuo’s side and never let him go through all the lies and slander he remembered.
