Fu Baihan’s heart ached for him. He even selfishly hoped the Su couple weren’t Su Nuo’s real parents, but he couldn’t bear to crush the kid’s hope of having a complete family.
The Fu family loved him, but blood was a bond that couldn’t be cut.
After all these years, something he could once think about rationally had become hard to face.
Seeing him upset made Fu Baihan feel even worse.
Su Nuo wrapped his arms around Fu Baihan’s waist and buried his face in his chest, his voice choked. “I don’t want to see them.”
Fu Baihan didn’t know what to say. “Sweetie…”
Hearing Su Nuo refuse, he should have stepped in as the mature one and talked sense into the willful kid, helped him see what the right choice was. But as the one being chosen, he didn’t want to push him away.
“Why are you crying?” Fu Baihan tipped up his chin, saw his face wet with tears, and wiped them away, his voice gentle. “This is a good thing. Maybe they’re the family you’ve been hoping to find.”
Su Nuo shook his head. “I don’t want to find them anymore. Brother, can’t I just be your little brother?”
Fu Baihan knew he’d always been insecure. Right now he looked so pitiful, just like a kitten soaked through in a downpour with nowhere to go.
“They didn’t look for me all these years. Who’s to say they ever wanted me in the first place?” Su Nuo sniffled. “I’m not going to some stranger’s house just to be a nuisance.”
In his past life, he’d thought he’d found his family too. But that home had only ever belonged to Su Yujin, never to him.
To the Su family, he’d been an awkward outsider, an unwelcome reminder of their mistake, the villain out to hurt Su Yujin.
“Don’t cry.” Fu Baihan comforted him, his heart aching. “I’ll turn them down for you, okay? Once everything’s been looked into, then you can decide whether to see them.”
Su Nuo admitted that part of it was an act. He just wanted Fu Baihan to comfort him. But once the emotions hit, everything from the past flashed through his mind like a slideshow, and he truly felt sad and that it had all been for nothing.
He hated who he’d been back then. Lost and confused, and once he’d lost the Fu family’s protection, he’d struggled at every turn. Why had he insisted on looking for warmth from other people? If he’d toughened up early on and drawn a clear line with those people, would he have suffered so much?
He used to be so stubborn. The more Su Yujin twisted the truth, the more Su Nuo wanted to prove himself and expose Su Yujin for what he really was. It wasn’t until he’d been through life and death that he understood: the people who care about you don’t need you to prove anything.
They were all madly biased toward Su Yujin. Even if Su Nuo found proof, the most they’d ever do was give a halfhearted apology, and they might even tell him to be the bigger person and forgive Su Yujin for a “moment of immaturity.”
Why bother fighting Su Yujin? There was no point. No matter what kind of circus they put on, Su Nuo wouldn’t spare them another glance.
Su Nuo was willing to let the original protagonists have their story. If Su Yujin wanted to marry Chu Boyan, go ahead. If he wanted to flirt with Yu Ning and Wei Sinian, go ahead. To Su Nuo, they were all unimportant clowns. But if any of them dared to jump in front of him and pull the same old tricks, he definitely wasn’t going to waste the amazing backing he had now.
He’d seen it at the audition. Su Yujin paid an unusual amount of attention to him. Even if Su Nuo was willing to let them be, Su Yujin probably wouldn’t let it go.
But that was fine. Whatever kind of monster Su Yujin was, whatever destined protagonist, Su Nuo would rip up his script with his own hands.
In Su Nuo’s story, he was the only protagonist.
After finally getting the kid to stop crying, Fu Baihan realized all of his own strange, dark feelings had faded too. The kid was right here beside him, depending on him. No one could take him away.
He’d never planned to let the Su family meet Su Nuo so easily anyway. What would that make the Fu family? How did they lose their child? How did they end up raising the wrong one? Until all of that was thoroughly investigated, Fu Baihan wasn’t letting the kid go anywhere near the Su family.
“Little crybaby.” Fu Baihan tapped his red nose fondly. “Everyone’s going to think I bullied you.”
If it were anyone else, forget an adult crying in front of him, even a kindergartener, he’d never have the patience to comfort them. He’d be more likely to get annoyed and toss them out.
But his sweetie was different. He’d watched him grow up, so it was like he was still that tiny little thing.
Fu Baihan suddenly felt a sense of responsibility like an “old dad,” which made him think of his actual old dad, Fu Mingyuan, who’d never personally raised a single kid apart from handing out money.
Su Nuo rubbed his face against Fu Baihan’s jacket. “You did bully me. Who tells someone to go off with strangers the moment they walk in?”
“That’s not fair.” Fu Baihan pretended not to notice the kid’s childish revenge and smiled. “I just told you what happened. Everything else was you overthinking.”
Su Nuo sniffled. “So it’s my fault?”
“It’s my fault.” Fu Baihan gave in without any limits. “Go wash your face. I’ll buy you milk tea to say sorry, okay?”
“Then you have to go buy it yourself.” Su Nuo, of course, took full advantage and ordered him around. “Go yourself. Don’t bother the secretaries.”
The CEO of the Fu Group immediately agreed, changed his jacket, and went downstairs to buy milk tea for his little treasure.
The secretaries got some astonishing news. According to photos employees had taken downstairs, the man waiting in line for milk tea was indeed their CEO.
You pushed back a meeting for THIS???
On second thought, it had to be for the little young master. The secretaries got it. Tsk. That’s what you get for scaring the kid with that grumpy face. Now you can take your time making it up to him!
Every day they grumbled ten thousand times: why don’t we have a brother like that? They wanted to swap souls with the little young master and enjoy being spoiled by their cold boss.
Su Nuo had his feet up, taking over Fu Baihan’s sofa. He took the milk tea from him. “It’s not sweet.”
Fu Baihan pinched his cheek. “Your tooth doesn’t hurt anymore?”
Honestly, if the kid hadn’t cried today, Fu Baihan would never have let him have milk tea.
“It’s a wisdom tooth. That’s not the same as a cavity…” Su Nuo argued. What do you do for a toothache? Drink something cold to calm it down.
He didn’t bother going home and just waited there for Fu Baihan to get off work. His manager sent a message checking in, mostly because he didn’t know what had happened and was worried the little young master was getting lectured.
A good kindergarten teacher also had to know how to mediate when there was conflict between the kid and the parent.
He couldn’t sway President Fu, but he could at least talk to the little young master.
Su Nuo was very cocky. “He wouldn’t dare yell at me.” I’ll just cry at him!
Manager: “I really want to screenshot that brave answer and send it to President Fu.”
Being the little young master’s manager meant he had Fu Baihan on WeChat, which was a major networking upgrade, in a way.
Su Nuo caved immediately. “Brother Chen, I know you’re not that kind of person.”
In the end, the winner was the manager, who held evidence of the kid’s bragging.
Seeing the little young master’s red, puffy eyes, the secretaries and the executives who came to report were all shocked. Whatever it was, how could you hit a kid at work?
Fu Baihan looked at everyone’s accusing stares: “…” I really didn’t. Why do you all think I’d hit a kid?
When they left work, seeing Su Nuo walking beside Fu Baihan, the two of them chatting quietly in a peaceful mood without any sign of a fight, the people who’d been secretly watching all afternoon finally relaxed.
Whether President Fu and his brother were getting along determined whether they’d go through hell tomorrow. It was very important.
Su Nuo went straight up from the underground parking garage. The Fu Group’s security was tight, so no paparazzi could sneak photos. Besides, he wasn’t famous enough to have people staking him out yet. But Fu Baihan was different. His fame was nationwide.
He went downstairs to buy one milk tea and got snapped in a single out-of-focus photo, and it still shot straight to the trending list.
Apparently a domineering CEO buying things himself really was shocking news.
He was standing in a crowd, and even though the photo was blurry, his proportions were way too good. Tons of people started claiming him as their husband.
Fu Baihan was definitely the most marriageable domineering CEO out there. The only person richer than him was his own dad. The Fu men were famous for spoiling their wives, and Fu Mingyuan and Su Jing’s love story was the envy of everyone. As their son, he surely wouldn’t have a messy private life like Ji Xinghui.
Ji Xinghui happened to see the comments online: “???”
Fine, simp for Fu Baihan, but why drag me down?
And stop dreaming. Who else would he personally buy milk tea for? He’s never spoiled anyone except his precious little brother.
“Brother, I want to sleep in your room tonight.”
As soon as Su Nuo stepped inside, he tugged at Fu Baihan’s sleeve and made his demand.
“Sure.” Fu Baihan patted his head. “That way you won’t secretly cry in the middle of the night. Poor thing.”
Su Nuo was happy he’d gotten his way, but also frustrated by how completely unbothered Fu Baihan was.
My brother really thinks sleeping together is totally normal!
They’d always been so close that now, trying to give their relationship a different color was kind of hard.
After sulking for a bit, he perked back up. If his brother was clueless, wasn’t that even better?
He could make all the fuss he wanted! His brother wouldn’t even realize he was being seduced!
Tonight he was going to shower and climb into his bed!
Fu Baihan wasn’t just completely unbothered. He went so far as to bring a glass of water and stand over Su Nuo until he took his medicine, then said with cold heartlessness, “I’m confiscating your phone. No staying up late.”
“I can’t fall asleep this early,” Su Nuo tried whining.
“If you can’t sleep, read a book.” Fu Baihan took the phone out of his hand. “Sweetie, if you stay up late your tooth will keep hurting. Do you want it to hurt forever?”
Su Nuo was speechless. “Have you been reading wellness articles off some old person’s social media?”
Brother, with you acting like this, it’s really hard to convince myself to seduce you.
Suddenly he felt a little guilty about trying to seduce such an honest man.
Su Nuo patted the spot beside him. “Then you don’t stay up late either. Come keep me company!”
Seeing the kid suddenly pouting, Fu Baihan smiled. “Okay.”
When he lay down and turned off the lamp, he felt the kid snuggle up next to him and drape an arm over him. “Brother, if they do the DNA test and want to take me away, would you let them?”
Fu Baihan wrapped an arm around his shoulders, his voice low. “I might just have to be the bad guy.”
